Lady Braves sweep Cougars in doubleheader on Saturday

BROWNSTOWN— Rylee May had a hitting lesson with her hitting coach in New Albany Wednesday night, The North Harrison and Trinity Lutheran softball teams probably wish she hadn’t taken the lesson.

She hit one home run in each of Saturday’s games against Trinity to help the Braves win 14-4 and 14-2. Thursday night she hit two home runs as the Braves closed out their Mid-Southern Conference schedule with a win.

May said she feels like she has her timing back. “It has to do a lot with just waiting on it.

“That was my problem. I was ahead of everything. It has a lot to do with going to the hitting coach.”

May has six home runs this season and holds the BCHS career mark with 19.

“I usually hit inside pitches the best, but I’ve been doing a lot better hitting outside pitches,” she said, and mentioned she has been able to drive the ball into gaps in left-center field.

On Saturday May hit her first home run during a four-run fifth inning of the first game. She also had a double in this game and three RBIs.

In the first inning of the nightcap, she hit a no-doubter that landed high in a tree beyond the right field fence. She also had an RBI double in the second game, giving her four hits, four runs and six RBIs in the two games.

After a scoreless first inning in the opener, the Braves scored four runs in the second, four in the third and four more in the fifth that came between singles runs in the fourth and sixth.

All nine Brownstown batters had at least one hit in the opener, giving the Braves 18 hits for the game.

Brooke Meahl went 4-for-4, including a double, and she had one RBI. Kelsey Schneider, Kinzee Dean, Olivia Justice, Emily Dillman and Adelynn Anderson all had two hits. Schneider, Meahl and Anderson had doubles, with Schneider, and Anderson both driving in two runs.

May went the distance on the mound and allowed six hits, four runs, she had three strike outs and walked two.

Grace Lance led the Trinity offense with a single, a double and she scored two runs. Emerson Warren had a single, RBI and scored a run.

Braves Coach Darren Bryant said he was pleased to see the Braves swing some hot bats as they had 16 hits in the second game.

“We had a stretch through the middle of our season, against some very good teams, and even our better hitters were struggling for a while,” he said. “We finally got it rolling Thursday against North Harrison and that continued today.

Bryant spoke on the hitting performance throughout the lineup.

“We hit well both games, up-and-down the lineup. That was great to see,” Bryant said. “We’re going to have to score some runs to win in the sectional so we’re hoping to keep going until then. We had some power, too. We had a stretch there where we had all singles. It’s a whole lot easier to score when you can get some extra base hits, and Rylee has been on a home run terror lately.”

The Braves were hot from the start in the second game as the first four batters in the bottom of the first had hits. Dean, batting second, had a hit to score Schneider, and May followed with her home run for a quick 3-0 lead.

May and Huddleston had RBI hits in the third inning to make it 6-0 and 10 batters went to the plate in the fourth inning, seven of them got hits and six of them scored.

Dean, Shaylie Steele, Shyla Steele, Justice, Anderson, and Lyla Huffman all had RBIs in the fourth inning.

Schneider had three hits, and Dean, Kyndle Huddleston, Alex Davidson, and Justice had two hits each.

Trinity Coach Herb Gross changed his lineup in the second game and started five freshmen, and three of them – Emerson Warren, Addi Burcham and Blayklee Hancock – had singles in the fifth inning.

Cain had two hits and one RBI.

Schneider pitched the first four inning had allowed three hits, no runs, she had six strike outs and one walk.

“The younger girls have been working hard in practice and we gave them an opportunity to give them a little bit of varsity experience,” Gross said. “I hope to get them more prepared for next season. I was proud of them. They didn’t give up. We fought to the very end against a very good team. That’s all you can ask of them.”

The Braves (11-11) will travel to Paoli Monday and the Cougars (12-9) will travel to Milan also on Monday.
