The Trinity Lutheran girl’s tennis team celebrated Senior Night Friday with a 4-1 win over New Washington.

Coach Jayme Lowe changed the lineup and had all five seniors competing.

Rachel Ward played No. 3 singles and lost 6-1, 7-5, 10-5 tiebreaker to Peyton Jones.

The other four seniors teamed up to win their doubles matches as Drew Hubbard and Kiley Zabel won 6-1, 6-0 over Violet Higdon and Kathleen Dougherty at No. 1 doubles, and Bridget Bingham and Natalie Martinez won 6-3, 6-1 win over Alivia Huffman and Abby Newcomb at No. 2 doubles.

Lowe said the seniors have a lot to be proud of.

“These girls have really built it up,” she said. “Drew and Kiley played varsity as freshmen and have inspired the other girls to join up along the way a, and they’ve just really made this a program that we’re really proud of that has a lot of positive energy and has become a really cool part of Trinity, I think. I’m very proud that they have done the work to have an awesome season.”

Trinity’s Katie Malone defeated Madison Brown 6-3, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, and Presley Meyer won 6-1, 6-0 over Megan Jones at No. 2 singles.

Lowe said she liked the way her team came out strong from the start by winning the first sets at all five positions.

“I think everybody was playing at the top of their game tonight. Having nice weather really helped. They were all in the right kind of mindset going in, just looking to have a good time on senior night. That always makes them play better when they’re in that.”

Lowe said she believes the 10 wins is a Trinity school record for victories.

The Cougars took a record of 10-2 into the conference tournament Saturday at Hanover College. The tournament began at 9 a.m. facing off with Southwestern (Hanover) and Milan.

Trinity defeated Southwestern (Hanover) 4-1 to advance, before losing to the Indians 3-2. Trinity then had a rematch with Hanover, falling 3-2 to finish in fourth place.

Katie Malone and Presley Meyer were named to the Southern Indiana Tennis All-Conference Team.

Trinity then closed its regular season Monday at Southwestern Shelby. The Cougars dropped the match with Southwestern 3-2 on Monday.
