Seymour High School’s 2024 senior scholars

Seymour High School is highlighting 10 of their 2024 graduates as senior scholars this year. To qualify as a senior scholar, these students must satisfy all the requirements for an Indiana Core 40 with Academic Honors Diploma, earn a minimum of 10 credits in advanced placement courses with no grades lower than a B and earn a minimum GPA of 4.90 for the 54 qualifying credits.

Of the 54 qualifying credits, 36 of them must be earned in English, mathematics, science, social studies and world languages. English, mathematics and science require eight credits each while social studies and world languages need six each.

The 10 senior scholars are the following:

Kayla Baker, daughter of Michael and Jamie Baker, is planning on attending Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology after high school to study computer science.

She is a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church where she has contributed to the Luther League for four years and serving as secretary for two of those years, the AV team for six years and has sang for the handbell choir for nine years.

Some of Baker’s awards include National Honors Society in 2022, Student-Musician of the Month in 2023 and Commended Student in the 2024 National Merit Scholarship program.

High school organizations and activities she participated in include archery for three years as a varsity team member (2022-2024) and she was both a state and national qualifier (2022-2024), robotics for six years and working as the 2022-2023 team leader, dance for 15 years and as both a teacher’s assistant (2019-2024) and teacher (2023) and varsity chorale for three years as a section leader (2023-2024).

Samuel B. Baker, son of Dr. Robert and Tiffany Baker, plans to earn his Bachelor of Science in cognitive science at Indiana University Bloomington.

His volunteer activities include helping distribute diapers for the Sweet Cheeks Diaper Drive in 2023.

Baker’s awards include National Honors Society (2022), Future Rising Stars of Indiana (2023) and National Rural and Small Town Recognition Award (2023).

Clubs, sports and other high school organizations Samuel has participated in include being a founder of the Sustainability Club, National Honors Society as vice president (2022-2023) and president (2023-2024), varsity cross country in 2023, band for three years and dance marathon for four years, acting as fundraising executive from 2023-2024.

Elise Hartung, daughter of Dr. Dave and Monica Hartung, plans on studying pharmacy at Butler University.

She is a member of the St. Ambrose Catholic Church. Some volunteer work that she’s conducted through her church include Christmas carolling for six years, Meals on Wheels for three years and leaf raking for three years.

Some of Hartung’s awards she has won include National Merit Finalist (2024), All-State Honorable Mention Tennis (2023) and Individual Academic All-State (2023-2024).

In school, organizations and activities Hartung participated in include marching band for four years and serving as a section leader in 2023, wind ensemble for four years as first choir bassoon (all four years) and Owl of the Month from 2021-2023, National Honors Society from 2022-2024 and playing tennis as a four-year varsity.

Ashlyn Henderson, daughter of Brandi and Brandon Henderson, is planning on pursuing nursing through Purdue University.

Her awards include National Honors Society (2023), varsity track (2022-2023) and Owl of the Month for Latin.

Henderson participated in high school sports, organizations and activities including the Owls’ marching band and Guard for four years, National Honor Society for two years as a reporter from 2022 to 2024, track and field as varsity for four years, soccer for two years as junior varsity from 2022-2023 and varsity from 2023-2024 and dance marathon for two years as executive leader from 2023-2024.

Lucas Jablonski, son of Adam and Susan Jablonski, plans on attending the University of Evansville to pursue international studies.

He is a member of the Calvary Baptist Church where he has played French horn in the orchestra for four years and has been an assistant at the children’s church for four years.

Awards Jablonski has won include the University of Evansville John Moore Scholar (2024), Indiana Academic All-Star (2024) and Cross-Country Leadership Award (2023).

Some high school organizations and sports Jablonski contributed to are Marching Owls for four years and acting as drum major from 2022-2024 and section leader from 2021-2022, the Owl student newspaper for three years and as editor in chief from 2022-2024 and track and field for four years, earning Academic All-State in 2023.

In the four years he ran cross-country and his accomplishments include being co-captain in 2023, winning the leadership award in the same year and earning Indiana Academic All-State in 2022 and 2023.

Sydney Montgomery, daughter of Craig and Holly Montgomery, is planning to attend the University of Indianapolis to study physical therapy.

She is a member of The Point church where she was a nursery caretaker for two years.

Some awards Montgomery has won include salutatorian of the 2024 Class, Academic All-State for Track and Field (2023), Most Valuable Athlete for track and field (2023) and all-conference for track and field (2023).

High school sports and organizations she participated in include volleyball for a year as freshman captain and varsity letter, basketball for three years as varsity letter, track and field for four years as varsity letter and student government for four years as a class representative.

Avery Musgrave, daughter of Sean and Brandi Musgrave, plans to attend Purdue University to study biology.

Some of Musgrave’s awards include the Purdue’s Presidential Scholarship (2024), ISTA Foundation Scholarship (2024) and National Merit Commended (2023).

Clubs, sports and other organizations Musgrave participated in include Lady Owls soccer for a year as both most improved player and Indiana Academic All-State in 2023, National Honors Society for two years as secretary from 2023-2024, D.A.R.E. role model for two years, Sustainability Club for a year, and Special Olympics for two years.

Bret Perry, son of Tim and Aimee Perry, is planning on pursuing business administration and management through the University of Indianapolis.

He is a member of the Emmanuel Church where he served on the impact team for two years, greeting church visitors and helping them find parking spots.

Awards Perry has won include National Honors Society (2022), Jackson County Outstanding Youth (2024) and Indiana All-State Honorable Mention Baseball (2023).

In school, some of the sports and organizations Perry participated in are National Honors Society where he completed 40 hours of volunteering from 2022-2024, student government for four years as vice president from 2021-2022 and president from 2022-2023, dance marathon for three years and as fundraising committee leader in 2023 and football for three years as captain from 2021-2023 and All-Conference from 2021-2023.

Brandon “Brandini” Van Doren, son of Alan and Tammy Van Doren, has interest in computer science and is planning on applying for internships in the game development field after high school.

Van Doren’s awards include Language Owl of the Month for Latin (2023), Indiana Math League second place (2024), Indiana Math League third place (2023) and Academic Bowl second place for Math (2024).

Sports and clubs Van Doren participated in include the bowling team from 2021-2023, Latin Club for the same span of time, Academic Bowl Club from 2023-2024 and Indiana Math League from 2023-2024.

Katherine Veatch, daughter of Marvin and Beth Veatch, plans on pursuing exploratory studies at Ball State University.

Some of Veatch’s awards she has won include Volleyball Coaches’ Award (2021), National Honors Society (2022-2024), Owl of the Month (2023) and high honor roll (2020-2024).

Some of Veatch’s clubs, sports and other organizations she has contributed to include volleyball for four years where she received the coaches’ award and Academic All-State (2023), track for two years, band for one year, Sustainability Club for one year and Red Sky Rescue for two years.
