NEW ALBANY — After two postponements due to rain, the Hoosier Hills Conference track meet took place Thursday at New Albany High School.

The Seymour boys finished third with a team score of 90, while the Lady Owls finished sixth with a 61.50 score. Floyd Central took the top spot in both meets. Head Coach Randy Fife spoke about the finish for the Owls.

“Third place is a solid finish in a competitive conference meet,” Fife said. “We competed well but left a few points on the board.”

Seymour recorded three wins on the boys’ side, taking the 4×100 and the 4×400-meter relay. The 4×100 team consisted of Mason Nugent, Kyle Hileman, Jesse Mellencamp, and Devon Jackson.

Jackson, Ty Tormoehlen, Kylan Ellerbe and Jaylan Johnson won the 4×400 event for the Owls. Johnson captured the only individual win, winning the 400-meter dash with a time of 50.27. Johnson also finished second in the long jump.

Other runner-up finishes included Lucas Jablonski in the 3200-meter run, and the 4×800-meter relay group, which had Jackson, Ellerbe, Tormoehlen and Tristan Dowell on the team.

The girls finished in sixth, led by Vivienne Siefker who won the 3200-meter run for Seymour. The Lady Owls recorded three runner-up finishes, two by Sydney Montgomery, who took second place in the 400-meter dash and the high jump.

The other finish was from the 4×800-meter relay team, which consisted of Siefker, Gracie Adams, AnnMarie Shuler, and Kelly Beavers.

Girls Head Coach Spencer Sunbury spoke about the outcome for the team.

“It’s been an up-and-down night, we had a lot of quirky things happen out there tonight,” he said. “It has been a weird week and tough on the girls. We’ve had some solid performances, but I’m hoping we got a lot of these miscues out of the way and clean them up for sectionals.”

Sunbury spoke about his seniors, who finished their final Hoosier Hills meet.

“They’ve done good tonight, Sydney had two solid performances,” Sunbury said. “All of these senior girls have been out here for the past four years; I know this was a big night for them. I know they all enjoyed the conference meeting.”

Montgomery was asked about her performance in her final Hoosier Hills Conference meet.

“This was one of my better performances this season,” she said. “I felt like I was more competitive in my events. I am happy with it.”

Montgomery’s favorite thing about the 2023-24 Owls track team is their ‘togetherness.’

“We’re truly a team throughout and there are never any ill-feelings about each other,” she said. “We’re all a family.”

The senior is ready to take on the postseason, which begins Tuesday.

“We’re excited to go out and compete again,” Montgomery said. “It will be a special night at Seymour, plus it will be the last time for some of us to run out there.”

The sectional begins at 5:45 p.m. at Seymour High School. Coach Sunbury spoke on a few ‘keys’ for a successful postseason.

“Just getting some consistency during the next few days,” Sunbury said. “The biggest thing this year was our confidence. It has been such a crazy year, and I think it has hurt the girls in some ways. There’s a lot of self-doubt and I’m not sure why. If all the girls believed in themselves, like us coaches do, I think their season would be much stronger.”

Coach Fife spoke about sectionals for the boys’ team.

“We’re still trying to get healthy, but we are continuing to improve,” he said. “It will be another strong, competitive sectional.”

The boys will compete at Bedford North Lawrence this coming Thursday at 6 p.m. The head coach spoke about his group of ‘seniors’ who completed their final conference meet.

“Our seniors have made huge gains over the last 4 years,” he said. “They’re continuing to set a standard of hard work and discipline for the underclassmen.”
