Braves edge Corydon for boys MSC track crown

SELLERSBURG — Coach Derrick Koch said during practices this week he told his Brownstown Central boys’ track team how important every point would be in the Mid-Southern Conference meet at Silver Creek High School Thursday night.

“We had a conversation the last two nights about how much one point is going to make a difference,” Koch said. “When I scored it out, based on our performance list, I knew it was going to be close, and I told the guys, ‘every point counts,’ and that it could come down to eighth place and it did tonight.

“I’m pretty happy to be on the winning side of that. Corydon did put up a great fight. Corydon has a lot of talented athletes, and they did well,” winning five events.

The Braves repeated their title from a year ago by the narrowest of margins by edging Corydon 146.25-146 for the title. Silver Creek was a distant third with 73 points.

That eighth place that Koch talked about came from Brady Blann in the pole vault. He tied with three other vaulters for eighth place, and they split one point and that made the difference for the Braves.

The Braves won four events, led by Hudson Fritz, who won the 100 in 11.14 and the 200 in 22.98.

Fritz was seeded third in both of his races.

“I had a really good start (in the 100). The whole race felt real good,” Fritz said. “After 20-25 meters I started to pick it up, and I took the lead. I got off to a real good start in the 200. The guy got ahead of me really quick, and I just found a faster gear and won it. I try to run as fast as I can out of the blocks, and then coast 90-95 percent on the curve, and then re-accelerate the last 100.”

He said he took the lead in the 200 with about 25 meters remaining.

“It feels great (to win). We’ve been putting the work in since March. It’s been a long, hard season. We’ve been dealing with some injuries and it’s finally good to get rewarded with our hard work. It’s nice to have the sectional at home. Track is a passion. I like running and competing.”

Koch said, “In that 200 race he found another gear and became a conference champion. I don’t know how he found that other gear, but it was fun to watch. He came in with his focus on tonight and won.”

Other Braves to place first were Chace Ratliff in the 3200 with a time of 9:48.25, and Jaden Disque in the discus with a throw of 128-9.

Ratliff said, “I wanted to take it out and see who was willing to go with me. I came through the mile at a decent time, and my second mile wasn’t too far from it, so I’m happy with that.

“I’m pretty happy with the 9:48. I’ve been doing the 4×8, the mile and two-mile at pretty much every meet, and I haven’t got to run a good, fast two-mile because I just haven’t been fresh. I ran the 4×8 and mile before this, but I told my brother (Shane) was going out there and run hard and see how long I

could hang on, and in the end, it paid off really well and I’m pretty happy with my time. It feels amazing.”

Disque was seeded second in the discus, and said he had his best throw in the trials.

He said he likes the discus ring at Silver Creek. “They have very nice facilities here. The wind can affect it a little bit, but it didn’t affect me today. You’ve got to be able to work through it.

“It’s a great feeling. I’ve worked really hard to get here and get in this position so it’s just nice that all my work has paid off. I like both (discus and shot). It just kind of depends on which one I’m throwing better that day.”

Braves placing second were Disque in the shot put (44-5), Isiaah Engle in the 110 hurdles (16.11) and 300 lows (41.45), and Jack Pace in the long jump (20-5). Third places came from Gregory Hutcheson in the 110 hurdles (17.04), and 300 hurdles (42.29), and Sloan Stuckwisch in the shot (41-7).

The Braves placed second in the 4×100 (44.25), and 4×400 (3:37.21) relays and were third in the 4×800 relays.

Koch said, “Chance in the two-mile, I’m happy to see running the way he is right now. He is running with a lot of confidence going into sectional, and Jaden Disque stepping up in the discus. I love that the guys showed a lot of great effort tonight.

“We had a lot of guys that I wasn’t counting on scoring, and they scored tonight, even some freshmen, like Landon Ault (eighth 55.71) in the 400. He comes out and does his best.

“That was a big thing we had talked about before the meet that it was going to take every person to try to score.”

Eli Crockett, sixth in the 800, is also a freshman.

Brownstown will host sectionals on Thursday night.
