Owls fall short in 5-4 loss to Providence

Coach Jeremy Richey says his Seymour baseball team is in a mid-season funk.

“We have got to figure out who we are. Today was embarrassing,” he said after the Owls committed four errors and gave Providence six unearned runs and lost 5-4 at American Legion Field on Saturday.

“This was a huge step backward in a game that could really have propelled us into a big week next week,” Richey added. “Floyd Central came out (Thursday) and beat us (7-1). You tip your hat to this.”

“This was us beating us and I don’t know if any of them cared a whole lot,” he said. “I’m frustrated with this group because this group is not buying things that we have always been pretty good at, and the things we have to be good at because of some of our inefficiencies.

“We’ve got to find ourselves really quick or (this) week is going to be an embarrassing week.”

The Owls took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Bret Perry walked, and he went to second on a wild pickoff throw.

Perry would steal third when the catcher’s throw went flying down the left field line.

The Owls committed two errors to give the Pioneers three unearned runs in the third inning.

Seymour did not have any hits through the first four innings of play.

Mikey Wright broke up the no-hitter with a single, and Jack Pennington had a walk, Brayden Richey and Parker Thompson also hit singles, and Perry followed with a double to right-center that plated two runs.

Richey’s hit also drove in a run, which would score Wright.

The Owls then committed errors in the sixth and seventh inning that allowed the Pioneers to score the tying and winning runs.

Harpe pitched the first six innings and allowed four hits, four runs of which all four were unearned, and he had three strike outs and two walks. Richey pitched the seventh and allowed two hits, one unearned run, and

The Owls had runners on second base in the sixth inning, and runners on first and second in the seventh but left then stranded.

Perry had a double and a walk, two RBIs and he scored two runs.

The Owls have dropped two games in a row for the first time this season and will take a record of 11-5 to Scottsburg Tuesday. Seymour will host the winner of the Jeffersonville-New Albany game for a Hoosier Hills Conference Tournament game on Wednesday.
