SCOTTSBURG — Detectives and crime scene technicians with the Indiana State Police Post at Sellersburg are investigating a fatal shooting that occurred just east of Scottsburg early Wednesday morning. 

The initial investigation reveals that around 1 a.m. Wednesday, Scott County officers responded to a shooting at an apartment located at 2929 E. State Road 56 in Scottsburg, according to a news release from Sgt. Carey Huls.

Huls, the post’s public information, said officers discovered that two male occupants of the residence were involved in an argument, and one subject shot the other with a handgun during the dispute.

EMS personnel immediately transported the injured subject to Scott County Memorial Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. County officers requested assistance, and state police detectives, troopers and crime scene technicians responded to the scene.  

Investigators are continuing the investigation; however, no arrests have been made at this time. Detectives do not believe there is any current danger to the public and all involved individuals have been identified.  

Authorities identified the deceased as 49-year-old Edward Milam Calton of Scottsburg. The family of the deceased has been notified.  

This investigation is ongoing, and detectives will provide all information to the Scott County Prosecutor for review and any possible charges.
