Hoosier farmers intend to plant less corn, more soybeans

 

Indiana farmers intend to plant less corn and more soybeans compared to last year,  according to the state statistician with the Indiana Field Office of the United States Department of Agriculture National Agricultural Statistics Services.

Nathaniel Warenski recently reported in a recent news release that acres intended for corn in Indiana are 5.10 million acres, down 6% from 2023.

Indiana producers intended to plant 5.75 million acres of soybeans, up 5% from last year. The winter wheat acreage seeded last fall for harvest in 2024 is estimated at 350,000 acres, down 14% from the crop seeded in 2022. Hay acres intended for dry hay harvest, at 550,000 acres, is up 4% from last year.

Nationally, corn planted area for all purposes in 2024 is estimated at 90.0 million acres, down 5% or 4.61 million acres from last year. Compared with last year, planted acreage is expected to be down or unchanged in 38 of the 48 estimating states.

U.S. soybean planted area for 2024 is estimated at 86.5 million acres, up 3% from last year. Compared with last year, planted acreage is up or unchanged in 24 of the 29 estimating states.Nationally, all wheat planted area for 2024 is estimated at 47.5 million acres, down 4% from 2023 for comparable states.

The 2024 winter wheat planted area, at 34.1 million acres, is down 7% from last year and down 1% from the previous estimate for comparable states. Of this total, about 24.3 million acres are hard red winter, 6.26 million acres
are soft red winter, and 3.59 million acres are white winter.

Area expected to be planted to other spring wheat for 2024 is estimated at 11.3 million acres, up 1% from 2023. Of this total, about 10.7 million acres are hard red spring wheat. Durum planted area for 2024 is expected to total 2.03 million acres, up 2% from the previous year for comparable states.
