Jackson County misses brunt of storms

A series of storms that raced through the state Thursday afternoon and into Friday morning left little damage and no injuries in Jackson County, but the same can’t be said for at least one other county in the state.

Other than a couple of trees down across roads, the storms created a power outage for about 600 people in Brownstown from 3 p.m. until about 5:30 p.m. Thursday, according to Duane Davis who is director of the Jackson County Emergency Agency.

According to a news release from the Randolph County Sheriff’s Department media reports of fatalities caused by a tornado in that north central Indiana county are false.

The department reported 38 people had been injured and 12 were transported to neighboring hospitals.

A declaration of emergency was declared there at 12:15 a.m. today, and the county requested IN-Task Force I, an Indiana Urban Search and Rescue Team, be sent to assist local first responders with searching structures. As of 3:30 a.m., 4,756 customers were without power in Randolph County.

By morning, most mutual aid including law enforcement, fire and emergency medical services personnel had been released.
