FLOYDS KNOBS — Coach Dave Boggs said members of his Seymour boys swim team gave it all they had at the Floyd Central Sectional on Saturday.

The Owls finished second in the 14-team field with 318 points, while Floyd Central repeated as sectional champions with 429 points.

Seymour had two divers qualify for the Jasper Regional on Tuesday night as Cole Simmons finished third with 282.55 points and Machy Burton placed fourth with 262.25 points.

Kaleb Brown coached the Seymour divers this season, and after the meet, he said he was proud to have two divers going on to the regional.

Brown said both divers had their best dives toward the end of their performances.

“Simmons had a good stretch toward the end where I had his best dives that I entered for him,” he said. “They weren’t higher DD (degree of difficulty) dives. They were just dives that I knew he knew how to throw well and I knew he would score well on.”

Simmons’ score was the highest of his career.

Brown said Burton got off to a slow start.

“Through his first couple rounds, he seemed a little bit off, but he picked it up after round six or seven,” he said.

Brown qualified for the regional the previous two years.

“Burton didn’t dive last year, so it’s a big feat for him in his first year,” Brown said. “Cole didn’t make it to regional last year, but he got to see what it was like. Hopefully, they will place pretty well. We need a good practice Monday and focus on Tuesday.”

Brown spoke about helping the divers throughout the season.

“The last two years I dove at the high school, I didn’t have a coach, so I was kind of trying to help Cole along last year as a coach and as a diver because he would see me dive and would see what I would do, and hopefully, he would replicate it that way,” he said.

Brown mentioned he has enjoyed coming back.

“Now, since I graduated, I can come back and help him have some kind of leadership instead of having them trying to figure it out on their own. It’s been fun,” he said.

Boggs said, “They’re good boys. They’ve worked hard this year. They help each other day in, day out, so it’s been really fun to watch them improve day by day, week by week.”

Leading the Seymour swimmers was Lane Mellencamp. He placed second in the individual medley and led off the 400 free relay team that placed second.

Boggs spoke on the performance from Mellencamp.

“Lane had a great meet. He dropped nine seconds in the IM on the meet,” he said. “He gave everything he had in that IM. He couldn’t even move after that relay. He barely could finish because he was competing so hard. That is a tremendous drop. That is him stepping up and doing the job.”

Mellencamp was seeded first going into the finals of the IM at 2:06.01. Kevin McIntyre of Floyd Central placed first at 2:01.55, and Mellencamp swam 2:01.98.

Larry Simons was one of the Owls who swam in the 400 free relay. He said he felt like he had a good sectional for his final high school meet.

“We really went out there and achieved what we wanted to and more,” he said.

He also swam in the 200 and 500 freestyles. He said the 500 is his strongest individual event. Simons said he enjoys swimming the third leg in the relay.

“I think we had a great year this year for the number of boys we had, and I thought we did great,” he said.

Seymour was second in both the 200 free and 400 free relays. Mellencamp, Larry Simons, William Proffer and Colin Hartung swam in both relays.

Simmons had the Owls’ only third-place finish, while Chaze Combs placed fourth in the 100 breaststroke, and Hartung was fifth in the 200 free.

Boggs spoke on the the Owls’ overall performance.

“I thought they performed very good,” he said. “They gave it all they had today. I couldn’t be more happy with this group than what they did from start to finish. They stepped up and they did the job.”
