Medora receives decorative lights for downtown thanks to donations

MEDORA — Residents of Medora and visitors will soon be greeted brightly in the downtown district as lights, ribbons and banners will be displayed during certain holidays.

Donnetta Bennett and Jacki Hall remember fondly as kids having the town lit up during Christmas and since then have wanted to revisit those childhood memories.

“We have talked about this for a couple years, and we just want to take it back to a time we remember as kids,” Bennett said.

Bennett and Hall have started a committee called Light Up Medora that includes their husbands, Larry Bennett and Tony Hall, as well as April and George Wilkerson and Kalli and George Berry.

Since their establishment, they have received $10,500 in donations toward banners, lights and various decorations.

“We did not expect to raise this much money,” Bennett said.

The town council also recently approved to install a backerboard to highlight those who have donated to the committee.

From Memorial Day until after the Fourth of July, colorful banners will be strung along the poles downtown completed with a “Welcome to the town of Medora” sign, and an American flag will be displayed.

For the month of October, in honor of the popular annual cancer awareness event, HOPE Medora Goes Pink, pink ribbons and lights will be hung throughout downtown to honor survivors and remember those who have lost their battle.

Starting the first of November and into the holiday season, the committee will decorate the downtown area with lighted snowflakes in hopes to get everyone in the holiday spirit.

Bennett said the committee is still taking donations and would eventually like to add lights and decoration for more holidays in the future, such as Easter and Halloween.

“We just hope to make the people of Medora feel proud,” she said.
