Fifth-straight sectional title behind them, Lady Cougars turn attention to regional

Liza Froedge described her time with the Trinity Lutheran girls basketball team last week as a week full of emotions.

“It was just good to get it all done in one week, those achievements in one week,” she said.

On Tuesday night, she became the fourth member of the Trinity girls basketball team to go over 1,000 points when she topped that mark in a 73-21 win over Medora in the opening round of the New Washington Sectional.

On Friday night, the Cougars bumped off New Washington 55-39 to reach the finals.

The following night, Trinity topped Rising Sun 67-58. It was the fourth straight girls basketball title Froedge has been a part of and the fifth straight title for the Lady Cougars.

“This one felt a lot different,” she said. “I picked up the role of the leader more, so it was more pressure for me to step up when my team needed me.”

The Cougars held a 50-40 lead entering the fourth period, and after the Shiners cut the difference to five points, the Cougars finished strong as Froedge was 4-for-4 in free throws in the fourth period.

“We did a good job of working the ball around and just making them come out and foul us,” she said.

The Cougars (14-11) will face Wood Memorial at 1 p.m. Saturday in the West Washington Regional.

“I’m excited,” Froedge said.

Froedge, junior Laura Roeder and freshman Marley Warren were named to the New Washington all-sectional team.

Roeder scored two baskets to help Trinity get off to a 17-4 lead at the end of the first period.

Roeder has helped Trinity win sectionals in both volleyball and basketball. She said when she heard she had been named to the all-tournament team, “I was excited and I’m thankful for all the opportunities I’ve been given and for all the amazing coaching that has been taught to help me get better.”

Roeder said she feels like this sectional feels different.

“I think I have a bigger role this year, but it’s still just as fun, and I love my teammates,” she said. “I’m a lot more of a ball-handler than last year.”

Warren, who scored 15 points in the championship game, said the sectional title feels pretty good.

“This is our fifth year in a row and the target was on our back, and obviously, we could feel that,” Warren said. “Everyone in the gym knew that, and it feels good to go up there and cut down that net. We worked really hard for it. We had to fight through adversity with some of our girls being in foul trouble, and I thought we fought through that pretty well.”

Warren and coach Darrin Kieth both said the Cougars will need a good week of practice in preparation for Wood Memorial.

“We’ve got to make sure we prepare for Wood Memorial and just be focused and be ready and confident to go in and play,” Warren said.

Trinity and Wood Memorial did not play during the season.

“We’ll get back to the drawing board,” Keith said. “When we have two or three days to prepare for somebody, the girls do a little better. We’re going to win on the defensive side of the ball. That’s where we play.”

The Cougars committed only six turnovers and forced Rising Sun into 13.

Trinity’s offensive average is 59.1, and its defensive average is 53.2, while Wood Memorial is averaging 50.2 and giving up 38.6 points per game.
