NEW WASHINGTON — Trinity Lutheran outscored New Washington 18-8 in the second period to break open a tie game and went on to a 55-39 win in the semifinals of the Class A New Washington Sectional on Friday night.

The Cougars will play the winner of Friday’s late game between Shawe Memorial and Rising Sun at 7:30 p.m. today.

Bailey Bonde, Jordan Brewer and Marley Warren scored field goals in the first period to help the Cougars to the 8-8 tie.

Warren opened the second quarter with a short jump shot, and Laura Roeder followed with a basket, putting the Cougars in front for good.

Warren scored seven points and Liza Froedge added four in the second period to help Trinity to the 26-16 lead at the end of the first half.

Froedge added two baskets and Warren had one field goal in the opening two minutes of the third period as Trinity increased its lead to 32-16.

Froedge had three baskets in the third period and 11 points in the fourth period and topped Trinity with 22 points.

Warren finished with 12 points.

Kaidin James topped the Mustangs (9-14) with 19 points.

Trinity coach Darrin Keith wants to see his team shoot better from the floor in general and especially from the 3-point range as the Cougars were only 1-for-17 shooting 3s and 22-for-58 overall.

Trinity defeated Rising Sun 57-37 during the season and did not play Shawe.

Trinity will be going after its fifth straight sectional title.
