Sandhill crane event planned at refuge

Celebration of Cranes will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Muscatatuck National Wildlife Refuge, 12985 E. U.S. 50, Seymour.

February is usually a big migration time for sandhill cranes through Jackson County, and there are presently many thousands of birds scattered around the county, especially in the Ewing and Honeytown bottoms along the East Fork White River. Everyone who enjoys birds is invited to visit Muscatatuck for an afternoon of learning about sandhill cranes.

During the event, there will be a crane craft/activity for children at the visitor center.

Self-guided tour information with directions to viewing sites will be available for those who would like to view cranes on their own.

Refuge staff will be on hand to give out information about cranes, and if there are large concentrations of birds nearby, two car caravan-type, guided crane viewing tours will be held starting at the visitor center, one at 9 a.m. and the other at 1 p.m.

This year, our winter resident cranes have been moving around a lot, and if no large groups of cranes are near the refuge Saturday, the guided tours will not take place.

An interpretive program about sandhill cranes will be given at noon by the refuge specialist at the visitor center.
