The Brownstown Central Lady Braves drew Southwestern (Hanover) in their opening sectional game.

The matchup takes place at 7 p.m. Tuesday Providence High School.

The winner of this game will get to face Henryville in the semifinal at 6 p.m. Friday.

Brownstown head coach Brandon Allman spoke about the upcoming postseason game with the Rebels.

“I have the utmost respect for coach (Brian) Crank and his Southwestern team,” Allman said. “They compete and play as hard as anyone we will play all season. They want to play extremely fast and push the basketball. They will shoot a lot of 3s and are a phenomenal offensive rebounding team.”

Allman said Southwestern is led by Ashley Fulton, Chloey Leach and Rorie Scroggins. Fulton averages 13 points per game, while Leach and Scroggins average nine.

Allman was asked about some keys on both sides of the ball for the Lady Braves to pull out a victory.

“Defensively, two huge keys will be limiting them in transition and keeping them off the offensive glass. The majority of their points seem to come from these two areas,” Allman said. “Offensively, we are going to have to take care of the ball and limit our turnovers. That is an area that has plagued us in some of our losses and close games.”

Allman continued speaking on offensive keys for the Lady Braves.

“We are going to have to find some scoring from our role players. We haven’t shot the ball well collectively to finish the season, and for us to win, we are going to have to have some girls step up and knock down some shots,” he said. “Lastly, we have to play with a sense of urgency and understand there are no second chances.”

Austin (17-6) and Providence (16-7) got matched up against each other in the bottom half of the bracket. The winner will face Eastern (2-21) or Clarksville (3-19) on Friday. If the Braves can get past the Rebels and Henryville, they would be in the sectional final at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

Allman was asked what the team must do in order for the Braves to have a deep postseason run.

“We will have to control the things we can control: Positive attitude, max effort for 32 minutes every game, understanding the scouting report, our defensive schemes and positioning, rebounding the basketball and limiting our turnovers and making sure we are taking great shots,” he said. “Of course, we will also need a little luck. I think every team that makes a run has to have some luck.”

Brownstown ended its season with a 15-8 record, including a sixth-place finish in the Mid-Southern Conference after having a 3-5 conference record.

Allman spoke about another successful regular season for the Braves.

“I have some mixed emotions after finishing the regular season. If you would have told me we would finish the season at 15-8, I would have been utterly pleased,” he said. “Trust me, I am extremely satisfied with that record; however, after starting the season 8-0, my hopes were set a lot higher.”

He spoke about the second part of the season for the Braves.

“We struggled after that start, finishing the last 15 games at 7-8,” Allman said. “Some of that has had to do with competition, some of that with our inconsistent play and some of that battling with injuries.”
