The Trinity Lutheran girls basketball team closed out its home schedule Tuesday night by whipping Greenwood Christian 66-23 in the Bollinger Athletic Complex.
This was the final home appearance for Liza Froedge and Morgan Brewer. Dianna Munoz, the other senior member of the team, is injured and was unable to play.
Coach Darrin Keith said the seniors have provided good leadership throughout the season.
“It was good to get some kids into the game, celebrate the seniors and get a W,” he said. “The stuff that they do for us goes beyond the basketball court, and I’m sure it’s like that at every program. They’re the big sister, they’re the ones that kids complain to and they are the kids that the kids look up to. This schedule gets kind of daunting when you’re playing every second day. I think those kids know what it’s like, and they get the young kids prepared for it.”
Trinity held a 10-6 lead with three minutes remaining in the first period when Bailey Bonde scored on a layup, Froedge made two free throws, Bonde scored off a rebound and Marley Warren hit a short jumper to spark the Cougars to an 18-7 lead at the end of the first period.
Warren added three baskets, Bonde had two baskets and a free throw and Zoey Dulaney hit a 3-pointer as Trinity outscored the visitors 19-6 in the second period to hold a 37-13 lead at the half.
Froedge, Bonde and Jordan Brewer combined for 14 points in the third period as Trinity expanded its lead to 56-19 going into the fourth period.
Brewer made two free throws at the 2:36nmark to make it a 54-19 score, and the remainder of the game was played with a running clock.
Bonde topped all players with 18 points, Froedge added 17 and Warren had 14.
“Our effort on defense kind of picked up. The first quarter, we settled for eight or nine 3-pointers (making none),” Keith said. “I called timeout and told them, ‘We’ve got to take the ball to the basket.’ Liza had a nice game, and Bailey has really come on the last two or three weeks, and she’s getting there. Morgan is on some minute restrictions from a concussion that she suffered a couple games ago.”
Sydney Waldron topped the visiting Cougars (4-15) with 10 points and eight rebounds.
Trinity will close its regular season Thursday night at Madison, then will face Medora in the opening game of the New Washington Sectional next Tuesday at 6 p.m.
