Abduction raises bar

Officials of Girls Inc. near downtown Seymour have taken steps to prevent an abduction similar to one reported to police on Wednesday night by a 10-year-old girl.

The Jackson County youth was abducted in the 500 bock of West Second Street in the area of the Girls Inc. clubhouse.

“We have decided soon that we are going to let all parents know that they have to come to the facility to pick up their children,” Rexanne Ude, executive director of Girls Inc., said late Friday afternoon.

Girls Inc. conducts a child abuse prevention program, Kidability, and also conducts a program where the girls are made aware of safety and club rule. That program occurs every six weeks, and ironically, it was in progress this week, Ude said.

Ude added Girls Inc. has never had an abduction during her years with the club, but there have been a couple of incidents where club officials were suspicious about an individual inquiring about children in the club.
