Winter tree identification workshops set at Spring Mill State Park

The public is invited to join Janet Eger from the White River Forestry Committee on Feb. 15 and 17 to their skills in identifying trees in winter.

The Feb. 15 session will be from 6 to 8 p.m. at Spring Mill State Park’s nature center east of Mitchell. In that session, Eger will explain ways to distinguish different species of tree without their leaves. As a forester with more than 40 years of field experience, she has learned many tricks to identify trees. She will bring twig samples so people can examine the buds of common trees to compare different species as well as nuts and seeds of those species and compare how the bark varies between tree species.

The Feb. 17 session also will be held at the state park. Participants will meet at 9 a.m. in the Grissom Memorial parking lot. In this session, Eger will take the group on a paved trail through the woods while the group practices identifying trees and show people the differences in bark, twigs, nuts and other characteristics.

Those unable to make the Feb. 15 session may still attend the Feb. 17 session. Other area foresters will be on hand to assist for an interactive hands-on session.

The cost is $10, and preregistration is required so there will be enough handouts. Space also is limited in the nature center. Refreshments will be provided at both sessions.

Call Teena Ligman at 812-278-0139 or email [email protected] for information and to register for the workshop — sponsored by the committee, which is part of the Indiana Forest and Woodland Owners Association and the state park.
