Bids for new gymnasium at Brownstown Elementary in the works

BROWNSTOWN — Bids for a project to add a gymnasium to Brownstown Elementary School should be ready for the next meeting of the school board.

Superintendent Tim Taylor delivered that message to trustees with Brownstown Central Community School Corp. during their recent meeting at the elementary school.

The $16.81 million project to be paid for through a bond issue also involves the upgrade/replacement of the school’s HVAC system. The bond issue will be repaid over a 22-year period.

The board’s next meeting is set for 7:30 p.m. Feb. 13 at Brownstown Central Middle School.

Taylor also discussed the possibility of additional career and technical education programs that could be offered to students.

“We currently have a student from Seymour High School participating in our CDL class, and we are working out the details for more to attend next year,” he said.

A drone class also recently was added to the programs at Brownstown Central High School.

Trustees also approved the retirement of Derrick Koch, a guidance counselor at the high school, at the end of this school year. Koch also is resigning as girls cross country coach and boys head track and field coach at the end of the school year.

In an unrelated matter, trustees approved an emergency allocation of $7,255.37 to Harrell-Fish Inc. for HVAC and chiller repairs and a second one of $7,085 to MD Electric for electrical installation at the high school. The payments leave the corporation with $85,657.63 in the emergency allocation fund.
