The Hoosier Hills Conference wrestling tournament took place Saturday morning inside Lloyd E. Scott Gymnasium.

The host Owls had wrestlers on three different mats at the same time.

Jesus Aguilar captured the day for Seymour, winning the 215-pound class to become the first HHC champion for the Owls since 2019. Aguilar defeated James Moss of Columbus East in a 2-1 sudden victory.

Seymour head coach Dan Rasey spoke about the day for Aguilar.

“Jesus secured our first conference title since the 2018-19 season,” Rasey said. “He pinned his way to the final. He avenged an earlier season loss that will be huge in sectional seeding. Jesus improved his record to 31-7 after his performance.”

Palik Findley put together the second-best performance for the Owls with a third-place finish in the 113-pound weight class.

Findley defeated Leblanc Phan of Floyd Central to secure his final placement.

“Palik rallied from down four in the third to secure a pin over his Floyd Central opponent,” Rasey said. “He improved his record to 25-13 with half those losses being at a higher weight class. Palik has grown so much over this season and become someone we depend on in each dual. I look forward to seeing how far he can come over the next few seasons.”

The team finished in sixth place with 109.5 points.

Columbus East took the top spot, while Floyd Central claimed the runner-up position. It then went Jeffersonville, Jennings County, New Albany, Seymour and Bedford North Lawrence.

“Overall, the meet went about how I thought it would. With Floyd Central having won the 3A team state dual title and Columbus East having finished third in the same tournament, they were coming in above the rest,” Rasey said. “The other five schools were left to fight it out for third, and that race was as competitive as expected.”

Mason Nugent and Alexis Cisneros finished in fourth place for Seymour. Nugent received a bye in the first round before dropping his second match to Bray Emerine of Floyd Central. He then defeated his Jeffersonville opponent via a 4-3 decision.

Cisneros took two forfeits for victories after losing her opening match to a Highlander.

Liam Chandler took fifth place after pinning Collin Massie in the fifth-place match to end his day.

Briley Compton, Nic Frady, Zach Edwards, Charlie Bruce, Raul Diego Juan, Vade Hanley and Philip Dacayo all finished sixth for the Owls.

Seymour will now start preparing for the sectional meet at Jennings County, which takes place at 9 a.m. Jan. 27. If wrestlers advance, they’ll move onto regional competition at 9 a.m. Feb. 3 at Jeffersonville.

Rasey spoke about building off of the conference meet.

“Overall, the day was a microcosm of our season. There have been many ups and downs with injuries and lineup changes, and you saw a lot of that on Saturday,” he said. “We have two weeks now to become hyperfocused and clean up some of those smaller things before heading to sectional.”
