Medora seeks candidates for clerk-treasurer

MEDORA — The Medora Town Council is seeking candidates interested in the position of clerk-treasurer after Jerry Henson recently resigned.

Henson, who ran unopposed in the November general election, said the reason for his resignation was due to conflicting schedules regarding his current daytime job.

Since Henson ran as an independent in the election and was sworn into the position before he resigned, the job of filling the vacancy falls on the town council, according to Indiana state statute (IC 3-13-9-3 Sec. 3 (b)).

The town council will need to fill the vacancy at a regular or special meeting no later than 30 days after the vacancy occurred and will have to give notice of the meeting.

According to state statute, if the town council is unable to select an individual to fill a vacancy in the office, a member of the council may assume the duties of the clerk-treasurer or the council can select a town legislative body member to serve as interim clerk-treasurer and assume the duties until the vacancy is filled.

Longtime Medora Clerk-Treasurer Betty Campbell, who did not run for reelection in the 2023 municipal election, agreed to assume the duties as interim clerk-treasurer until the vacancy is filled. Campbell was appointed and approved by the town council and will be sworn in on Jan. 31.

“We appreciate Betty for sticking with us until we fill the position,” Council President Brad McCammon said.

Even though it is considered a temporary position, Campbell could hold the office for four years, which is the elected position’s term of office. Campbell does not receive any additional compensation for assuming her duties and will continue to make her annual salary of $30,000.

McCammon said this has been a unique situation and the first the town has ever experienced.

“We are taking the necessary steps to make sure we do this the right way because this has never happened to us before, and we want to do it correctly,” he said.

McCammon asks those who are interested in the position to submit their name via email at [email protected]. There will be an application to submit and an interview process before the town selects and appoints an individual for the position at a regular or special board meeting.
