CAMPBELLSBURG — The postseason arrived for the Seymour girls wrestling team on Saturday.

The Owls competed in the IHSGW Regional at West Washington High School.

Advancing qualifiers will compete at Mooresville High School on Friday at 11 a.m. After a hard day of wrestling, four Seymour girls advanced to the semistate meet.

Isabella Doyle and AnnMarie Shuler both won their classes to advance, while Megan Stout and Greydis Chub finished runner-up in their classes to punch their ticket into the next round of the postseason. Ana Rodrgiuez finished in sixth place and did not advance for the Owls.

Girls head coach John Shuffitt spoke on the outcome of the regional meet.

“I think the girls wrestled good at the regional, especially for how young the team is,” Shuffitt said. “The girls have improved tremendously. They have learned a lot about match awareness and have strengthened their technique.”

Shuffitt also spoke about the four Seymour girls who advanced to semistate.

“I am very happy for the girls that qualified for semistate. We had two girls that are first-year wrestlers, Isabella and Megan, so this is a big accomplishment for them,” he said. “Greydis has had some experience wrestling this season as a freshman, so it’s awesome seeing her qualify. AnnMarie is our wrestler with the most experience, so she has been here before, and it’s good to see her taking care of business.”

Doyle went through Tienica Dits of Columbus East and Maya Bullock of Madison to advance. She pinned both opponents in her matchups.

Shuler dominated her Jennings County opponent in Addie Otte before edging Avy Burkholder of Switzerland County in a 3-2 decision.

Stout finished in second place, pinning Abigail Lemon of Jeffersonville before falling to Serenity Sims of Switzerland County.

Chub defeated Elle Strother of West Washington in a 5-0 decision. She then fell to Eden Knight of Columbus East in a 6-5 decision.

Rodriguez dropped her first matchup to Jo Eimes of Jeffersonville before winning her next one over Brookellen Prosser of Madison. She then fell to Ally Bolen of North Harrison before competing in the fifth-place match against Payton Stow, dropping that match to finish in sixth place.

Seymour was expected to have three more competitors with Kayla Martinez, Kelsie Napier and Mareli Hernandez. Unfortunately, Martinez had an illness and could not compete. Napier and Hernandez both had season-ending injuries and will be back next season.

“We had four nonqualifiers on our team this year,” Shuffitt said. “Sadly, we weren’t able to see these girls wrestle at regional. Ana missed out on wrestling at semistate. She had a tough weight class, and she wrestled hard. We will be looking forward to next year and getting better between then and now.”

Now, the Owls have a chance to advance to state in their next competition, which starts at 11 a.m. Friday. Tickets for the event will be $10 per person and will be sold at the door. Admission is free for children 5 and under.
