Man rescued from grain bin

A man was flown to a hospital after being rescued from a grain bin on New Year’s Day.

At approximately 3 p.m. Monday, the Hamilton Township Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to the 5000 block of East County Road 800N for a person trapped in a grain bin, according to a news release from the department.

Firefighters arrived on scene within 6 minutes of the call and found a male engulfed in corn up to his shoulders.

Firefighters from Hamilton Township along with firefighters from multiple mutual departments, including Seymour Fire Department, Redding Township Volunteer Fire Department, Crothersville-Vernon Township Volunteer Fire Department, Jackson-Washington Township Volunteer Fire Department, Driftwood Township Volunteer Fire Department, Grassy Fork Township Volunteer Fire Department and Owen-Salt Creek Township Volunteer Fire Department, utilized specialized equipment for grain bin rescues to extricate the male.

Approximately 70 minutes after the initial call, the male, whose name was not released, was freed. He was treated on scene by Jackson County Emergency Medical Services and flown by PHI Indiana 7 to a trauma center for treatment. The male was alert and talking on scene.

Firefighters were assisted by Jackson County 911, Jackson County Sheriff’s Department, Jackson County EMS, Jackson County Emergency Management Agency and Seymour Water Pollution Control.

“We would like to thank each department and responder who responded to this call,” the Hamilton Township Volunteer Fire Department said in the news release. “The dedication and teamwork put forth this afternoon made for a successful outcome for a very dangerous situation.”
