Lady Hornets’ rally not enough against Warriors

MEDORA — It was a snowy evening on Monday, but the sports were inside the Medora High School gym for a varsity doubleheader against Christian Academy of Indiana.

After a hard-fought battle, the Lady Hornets held the lead by one after three quarters but fell short in a 55-41 loss to the Warriors.

Medora head coach Malik Cook-Stroupe spoke on the outcome.

“I thought we played really hard and gave ourselves a chance,” he said. “I thought they played a little harder than us. I thought they exploited our weakness. We don’t block out, and I thought they took advantage.”

The Hornets’ offensive output was led by Jenna Bowers and Aaralyn Hackney, who scored 34 of the 41 points for Medora. Bowers finished with 19, while Hackney scored 15.

They both spoke on the matchup with the Warriors.

“I thought it was definitely a winnable game. We lacked in some areas, which didn’t help us. I thought we played well and then let off the gas. It was awesome to see us fight, but we let off too early,” Bowers said.

“I thought we could have played a little better in some spots,” Hackney said.

Medora outscored the Warriors 29 -21 in the second and third quarters, holding a 39-38 lead going into the fourth quarter.

The team was then outscored 17-2 in the final quarter. Alexus Bryant put on a clinic for the Warriors, scoring 24 points, including going 6 of 8 from the free throw line.

After the first quarter, the Warriors held a 17-10 lead, but Medora picked up the slack on offense with Bowers and Hackney leading the charge in the second quarter, hitting 3-pointers to cut the deficit to four at halftime.

The third quarter started with some stout defense from the opposition, but the Hornets broke through at the end of the quarter.

Bowers sank a 3 before scoring another basket to make it a one-point deficit. Hackney then buried a deep jumper, sending the Medora crowd in a cheer, tying the game at 36.

The senior then caught the ball at the top of the key with 1:50 left, burying another to officially take the first lead of the game at 39-36.

Bowers and Hackney continued to hit 3s, eventually taking the one-point lead after the third quarter.

Cook-Stroupe spoke on the offensive consistency in the second half, mentioning it was due to the defense the Hornets were playing.

“We were starting to get stops and play full defensive possessions, getting rebounds, stepping up for a little bit in the second half,” he said.

Foul trouble hurt the Hornets. Hackney and Brelee Underwood both fouled out in the fourth quarter.

After that, Medora had trouble finding any rhythm on the offensive side of the ball.

The Hornets will have one more game before the new year, traveling to Cannelton to face the Bulldogs on Friday at 6 p.m.
