Girls basketball

Crothersville

A dominant third quarter lifted Crothersville to a comfortable 49-30 victory over Cannelton on Friday.

The Tigers (3-6) outscored the Bulldogs 22-2 in the third period to take full control of the contest.

Crothersville fell behind 11-7 in the first quarter but bounced back to tie the game at 20 before making its game-changing run early in the second half.

Three Tiger players finished in double figures, led by Jojo Clay, who made two 3-pointers and scored 13 points. Jaylin Gibson, with three 3s, followed with 12 points, while Kendra Kelsaw ended with a double-double, grabbing a game-high 11 rebounds and scoring 10 points.

Kelsie Walker had nine rebounds to go with two points. Bella Riley and Joshlyn Luenebrink each scored four points, while Hali Burton and Laura Redifer chipped in two points each.

The victory is the Tigers’ third straight since opening the season with a run of six losses. They’ll look to extend their winning streak on Thursday when they travel to Southern Athletic Conference rival South Central (1-7).

Medora

Slow starts hurt Medora in two defeats over the weekend.

On Friday in a 55-42 loss, Lighthouse Christian outpaced Medora 29-16 in the first half, giving it enough of a buffer to withstand a stronger performance by the Hornets in the second half.

On Saturday, Medora fell behind 26-8 in the opening half and never recovered during a 50-25 defeat to Southwestern (Hanover).

Jenna Bowers and Aaralyn Hackney highlighted Friday’s effort against Lighthouse Christian. Bowers led with a game-high 19 points, including 9-for-10 shooting from the foul line. Hackney, meanwhile, made six 3-pointers and finished with 18 points.

Brelee Underwood scored four points for the Hornets. Madison Reece added a point.

Against Southwestern, Bowers poured in 12 points in the third quarter, accounting for all of her team’s offense during the period. Southwestern, however, collectively outscored Bowers 13-12 to maintain its lead.

As she had the night before, Bowers led with a game-high 19 points, including two 3-pointers. Hackney followed with four points, while Heavenlee Brown added two points.

The road doesn’t get any easier for the Hornets (1-7), who traveled to play Henryville on Tuesday and now prepare for the Southern Roads Conference Tournament on Saturday.

Brownstown Central

The Lady Braves faced off with Eastern (Pekin) on Saturday, defeating the Musketeers, 45-22.

Brownstown jumped out to a 11-9 lead after the first quarter and never looked back, dominating the second quarter, not allowing a single point in the quarter. The girls took a 24-9 advantage into halftime.

Brownstown cruised to a 42-16 lead at the end of the third quarter.

Leading the scoring for the Lady Braves was Mallory Klosterman, who scored 12.

Addison Darlage added 10 for Brownstown, Harley Toppe had nine and Jenna Klosterman scored six. Sophie Wischmeier scored four, Kinzee Dean had three and Kelsey Schneider scored one to make up all the scoring for Brownstown.

Emma Brunner had seven for Eastern, and Katie Hunter had six.

The Lady Braves are now sitting at 7-0 on the season.

Boys basketball

Crothersville

A record-setting night by Dirk Crater propelled Crothersville’s boys basketball team to an overwhelming 76-28 win over Cannelton on Friday night.

Crater made eight 3-pointers, breaking the previous mark by one, and finished with 30 points. Teammate Tymir Cromwell also enjoyed a stat-stuffing night, finishing with 14 points, nine assists, eight steals and six rebounds.

Beau Napier scored 14 points, while Lucas Hilton grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds and added eight points, helping the Tigers (1-2) pick up their first victory of the year.

Adam Turner finished with six points, and Elijah Plasse had four.

In all, Crothersville made 12 3-pointers during the game. Crater sank three 3s in the first quarter, helping the Tigers race to a 25-4 lead.

He added a 3-pointer in the second period, another in the third and then broke the record with three 3s in the fourth quarter. Napier and Turner each knocked down two 3s.

The Tigers will look to maintain their momentum heading into a double weekend, hosting Lighthouse Christian (2-2) on Friday and traveling to Borden (3-1) on Saturday.

Medora

Medora used a strong second quarter to pull away to a 64-43 victory over Lighthouse Christian on Friday.

The Hornets (1-1) earned their first win of the season by draining three 3-pointers and outscoring Lighthouse 19-4 during the second period. Medora limited the Lions to a single field goal and two foul shots during the decisive run.

Medora finished with four double-figure scorers.

Damian Salas led with 21 points. Kade Wright (15 points), Hudson Johnson (13) and Jaxon Nugen (11) followed. Dawson Cornett and Ault Hineman added two points each.

The Hornets then faced off with Brown County on Monday, losing to the Eagles 72-59. Brown County improved to 3-2 on the season with the win, with Medora falling to 1-2.

Johnson led the way for the Hornets, scoring 20 points. Nugen followed with 16 with Salas scoring 12 in the loss. Wright ended the game with seven, while Cornett and Eli Lane both scored two points.

The Hornets will now play Vincennes Rivet on Saturday evening at 7:30 p.m.

Brownstown Central

The Braves faced off with Lawrence North in the Sneakers for Santa tournament held in Brownsburg on Saturday evening. L

Brownstown fell to the Wildcats 72-47.

Kai McGrew led the way in scoring for Lawrence North, scoring 18 points. Azavier Robinson added 12 points for the Wildcats.

Parker Hehman led the way in scoring for the Braves, scoring 24 points.

Brownstown was without Jack Benter and will now prepare to face off with Scottsburg on Friday at 7:30 p.m. Brownstown will look to grab its fourth win of the season.

Seymour

The Owls boys basketball team faced off with Franklin on Saturday evening, dropping the matchup Grizzly Cubs, 43-29.

Franklin improved to 3-1 on the season, with the Owls falling to 2-2. Seymour will look to bounce back after starting 2-0, hosting Jeffersonville on Friday at Lloyd E. Scott Gymnasium.

The matchup with the Red Devils will start at 7:30 p.m.

Swimming and diving

Seymour

The Owls swimming and diving teams competed against New Albany on Tuesday evening. The Owls swept the Bulldogs with the girls winning 113-69 and the boys winning 109-68.

Full results will be added online.

Seymour will now prepare to host the S Invitational on Saturday at 9 a.m. The girls and boys will both compete.
