Child dies in Jennings County wreck

A 3-year-old child died as the result of a crash in Jennings County, police report .

According to a news release from the Jennings County Sheriff’s Office, officers responded to a report of a wreck on County Road 1000W south of County Road 200N at 8:16 p.m. Saturday.

Upon arrival, officers located a 2016 Nissan Rogue that had been involved in a single-vehicle crash.

The initial investigation shows the Nissan, being driven by Lisa Ely of Seymour, was traveling northbound on County Road 1000W when it left the right side of the roadway, struck a culvert and went airborne, striking a tree, police said. The Nissan then came to rest on the west side of the roadway.

As a result of the crash, Thomas Ely, 3, sustained fatal injuries.

A male juvenile and a female juvenile sustained serious injuries and were transported to Schneck Medical Center in Seymour before being transported to Riley Hospital for Children at Indiana University Health in Indianapolis for further treatment. None of the children were properly restrained, police said.

Lisa Ely was transported to Schneck for treatment before being transported to an Indianapolis area hospital for additional treatment.

This investigation is ongoing, and toxicology results are pending, police said.

The Jennings County Sheriff’s Office reminds drivers and parents of the importance of ensuring their children are properly restrained in the proper equipment for their age.

Assisting at the scene were Rescue 20, Spencer Township Volunteer Fire Department, Indiana State Police, Jackson County Sheriff’s Department, Redding Township Volunteer Fire Department, Jackson County Emergency Medical Services and Seymour Police Department.
