According to Brandon Allman, there wasn’t much doubt about who was the best female golfer in Jackson County this fall.

“Gracie Reynolds was the best golfer on the best team in the county,” the Brownstown Central girls golf coach said.

She was the Braves’ most valuable player, runner-up in the Mid-Southern Conference tournament to earn all-MSC honors, fourth in the Madison Invitational and fourth in the Bedford North Lawrence Sectional.

With a resume like that, she has been named The Tribune’s girls golfer of the year.

Reynolds played volleyball her freshman year.but didn’t enjoy it enough to play after that season.

“My dad always played golf, so I thought I would pick it up because I was kind of over volleyball and I wanted to try something else,” she said

She started her sophomore season as the Braves’ No. 6 player but worked herself up to No. 5. She was named most improved player that season.

Reynolds has played at the No. 1 position the past two years and led the Braves in nine meets her junior year and six times this fall. She shot an 83 in the sectional and an 84 in the regional and averaged 87.8 in tournaments and 42.1 for nine holes. She also was MVP and all-conference her junior year.

Allman said Reynolds led the Braves in every match the last two years except for one meet her junior year.

“She was just our leader,” he said. “The improvement she has shown is just amazing. Her first year, her average was 62 or something, and now, it’s all the way down to 42. You really have to dedicate yourself to something and find love for something with passion and really try to achieve your goals and good things can happen, and it definitely showed with her. From tee to green, it seemed like she never missed a fairway.”

Reynolds said she likes playing on the Braves’ home course.

“I like Hickory Hills a lot,” she said. “I think they’re really good at keeping maintenance up, and I’ve always thought the course was really nice. My favorite hole is. No. 4. It’s the par 3. The hardest hole for me is No. 2. My low score there was 40.”

Reynolds said her low nine-hole score this fall was 39 at Otis Park, and her low tournament score was 83, also at Otis Park,in the sectional. She said her favorite away course is Otis.

“I like the front nine,” she said.

The regional was played at Country Oaks near Montgomery.

“I like it a lot,” Reynolds said about that course. “It’s pretty fun.”

One reason she said she plays golf is because you can play it all your life.

“You can make great friends out there,” she said. “It’s an individual sport, but it can also be a team sport. I like that you can take any shot you want. You can have anybody you want to just go out there and play. It doesn’t make any difference if you’re good or bad. It’s fun either way.”

She has confidence in her iron shots.

“I’d say my second shot is usually where I’m pretty good with my irons,” Reynolds said. “I really struggled with my driver. I always have. I did a lot better this year than last year. My putting was pretty good this year. I got a new putter this year, and that helped.”

Reynolds said she is thinking about playing golf in college. She hopes to play somewhere in Indiana and wants to major in being a physician’s assistant or nursing.

She said she enjoyed being a member of the Brownstown team.

“I’ve always loved how family we are as a team,” she said. “On the bus, it was so fun, just listening to music and having fun. It doesn’t matter what sport it is. It’s being with your friends and having fun.”

Allman said Reynolds was crucial to the program the last three years..

“One thing she is going to have to work on is her length at the college level. In college, they lengthen (courses) out and play more like the guys’ tees,” he said. “She definitely has the capability to play in college. She is a consistent ball striker, and the more she plays, the more confident she is going to get.”
