Seymour hosted the Panthers Saturday morning, hoping to advance past Jennings County.

The match was the sectional semifinal at Seymour High School.

The winner had the chance to face off with Floyd Central in the sectional championship Saturday evening.

Seymour advanced past the Panthers in a back-and-forth battle that went to the fifth set. The Owls took the match 25-22, 14-25, 25-23, 20-25, 15-11.

A huge block sent the crowd into a frenzy to clinch the match win.

Head coach Angie Lucas spoke about the game with Jennings County.

“It was a great match against the Panthers. They are a well-coached team and a well-run program,” Lucas said. “Again, we showed fight and determination, and I think playing at home helped us and being prepared mentally. We made a few adjustments, and they responded very well.”

It seemed like Jennings County grabbed all of the momentum after the second set, executing plays to win the set by 11 points. The Panthers took that into the third set, grabbing the early lead at 5-1, before Seymour rebounded.

The set was like a pendulum swinging back and forth before the home team secured the 25-23 win. After a break, Jennings County took the fourth set by getting out to an early 6-1 lead.

A final run with the game tied at 19 secured the set win for the Panthers.

In the fifth and final set, there was no shortage of drama with each pass and point making that much more of a difference.

The Owls hunkered down and took the lead at 13-11, securing the final two points, clinching their spot in the sectional championship.

The emotional win was a sight to see inside Seymour High School on Saturday morning.

Lucas continued speaking about the victory.

“We were able to settle in and grab a win. It was good to see that from the team,” she said.
