Tribune staff receives awards at HSPA Journalism Conference

INDIANAPOLIS — Tribune staff members received nine awards at the 55th annual Hoosier State Press Association Journalism Conference and Awards Luncheon on Friday in Indianapolis.

The Tribune competed in Division 3 with daily newspapers that have less than 6,000 in circulation.

First place awards went to:

Zach Spicer for best feature photo including a little boy inside a tractor wheel with the headline, “Ag Day.”

Lew Freedman for Best Sports Commentary.

Second place awards went to

Zach Spicer for a photo taken at the final EXCL race of three boys crossing the finish line in the Best Sports Feature photo category.

Spicer also placed second in the Best Multiple Picture Group category from his coverage of quiet time at the Jackson County Fair.

Lew Freedman for his Best Profile Feature Story for “A second chance at life: Seymour man earns reward from pizza chain.”

The Tribune staff for headline writing for this series of headlines, “Ready to Slay,” a story on a local drag queen, “Breaking the Chains,” for a story on female inmates finding healing through worship services and “Surveying a Career,” for a story about a forest service employee recognized for 50 years of service.

Third place

Tribune Editor Aubrey Woods for Best Editorial Writer.
