Hornets drop match on Senior Night, prepare to host sectional

MEDORA — Medora volleyball closed out the final part of its schedule by hosting Borden for Senior Night on Tuesday.

Borden, however, spoiled the Hornets’ celebration by going home with a 25-11, 25-18, 25-17 win. Prior to the match, senior players Aaralyn Hackney, Jenna Bowers, Laykin Hinderlider and Peyton Spence and their parents were introduced.

Medora coach Hanna Hinderlider said the seniors have meant a lot to her and the program this fall.

“Aaralyn started out as our libero. She still played the same role as the libero, but I didn’t have her dress as a libero so that way, she could play up or play back as needed,” Hinderlider said. “Laykin is our setter. She hustles out there on the floor, certainly nonstop. She has come a long way, too, this year. Everybody has improved.

“Jenna is our outside hitter and our main hitter right now. She has obviously taken it from that end, ” she added. “Peyton came in this year never playing volleyball before, and to just see her improvement from not being able to serve, not knowing how to pass to passing, getting her serves over, she has come a long way. She fills in wherever is needed and has helped us out, and she goes with it.”

Borden took an 8-2 lead in the first set, then increased the margin to 18-5 before Medora scored back-to-back points to make it 18-7. Medora again scored consecutive points with a kill by Brelee Underwood, making the score 19-9, but Borden finished with a 6-1 run.

Borden opened a 16-10 lead in the second set when Hinderlider stepped to the serving line and had four aces among six serves that tied the set at 16. Borden came right back with a 5-0 run to take control of the set.

Medora took a 6-3 lead in the third set on a kill by Bowers, but Borden went on a 10-2 run to take a 13-8 lead.

The closest Medora could get after that was 21-17 on another kill by Bowers before Borden scored the final four points of the match.

Borden found holes in Medora’s defense throughout the match.

“Right in front of the three-point line was their main hitting spot, and that killed us tonight,” coach Hinderlider said. “Our girls couldn’t seem to get underneath the ball and pass those balls falling right in front of the three-point line, but we did a good job covering the tips and playing off the blocks and stuff a lot better. I was proud of them for that. I switched up our rotation a little (starting all four seniors). That kind of threw people off. They were used to playing in our regular rotation, and that was different tonight.”

Medora finished the regular season with a record of 7-19 going into the Medora Sectional.

The Hornets drew a bye and will play Rising Sun at 11 a.m. Oct. 14.
