County unemployment dips to 3.1% in August

Jackson County’s unemployment rate stood at 3.1% in August, according to the Indiana Department of Workforce Development’s latest report released Tuesday.

Overall, 22,355 county residents were on the job during the month. That’s 552 less than in August 2022 when 22,907 county residents were working. The jobless rate at that time was 3%.

The August rate, which is preliminary, was 0.3% lower than the final 3.4% rate for July.

The number of county residents reporting they were looking for work in August was 723, compared to 698 who were looking for work during the same month a year earlier.

The county’s labor force was 23,078 in August, which is 527 less than labor force of 23,605 during the same month in 2022.

The county’s unemployment rate for August was lower than the state’s rate of 3.7% and the national rate of 3.9%.

Other nearby counties and their preliminary unemployment rates for August were Bartholomew, 3%; Brown, 3.3%; Jennings, 3.4%; Lawrence, 4.1%; Monroe, 3.7%; Scott, 3.9%; and Washington, 3.6%.

Daviess County had the lowest rate in the state at 2.6% in August, and Lake County had the highest at 5.9%.
