MEDORA — As the school year comes in full swing, Medora Community School Corp. continues to focus on helping students succeed on qualities such as responsibility, empathy and determination.

During Monday night’s board of school trustees meeting, the August R.E.D. Hornets of the Month were honored.

Those honored include sophomore Madison Reece for her responsibility in the classroom, sophomore Izzy Spence for determination and dedication and sixth-grader Jaylex Slick for his work ethic and helpfulness toward others.

Principal Kara Hunt introduced the honorees to trustees and read statements from their teachers.

Science teacher Leah Young said Reece is a wonderful student, and she has always loved having her in her class.

“Maddie is very deserving of the title Hornet of the Month because she is responsible, determined and empathetic. She goes out of her way to ensure that she accurately completes her work,” English language arts teacher Rebecca Lanier wrote. “She strives to improve in all areas of her academic and athletic career. Madison is a model student with an excellent attitude, and it is a pleasure to have her in class.”

Math teacher Kyle Derheimer said it has been a pleasure watching Reece grow and mature as a student over the past two years. He said when he had her as an eighth grade student, she was reserved and struggled in math, and now as a sophomore, she is the president of her class and one of his top geometry students.

“Madison demonstrates responsibility by being continuously on top of what assignments and work she has,” teacher Bobbi Derheimer wrote.

Spence was honored for her determination and being a successful student.

“Izzy has shown so much growth over the past year,” Young wrote. “She is such a delightful young lady and a pleasure to have in class.”

Bobbi Derheimer said Spence shows great determination in pushing herself to achieve goals and is seeing great progress from doing so.

“I am very proud of Izzy for her dedication to her work in my class, her ability to overcome major obstacles and her willingness to accept feedback and apply it to her actions,” Lanier wrote. “She is a responsible and successful student because of her drive to succeed, and she definitely deserve the title Hornet of the Month.”

Kyle Derheimer said Spence is an amazing young lady who has come so far in a short period of time. He said she was one of only two students who earned 100% on the last geometry exam.

Slick’s teachers honored him for his work ethic and praised him for his respectful attitude.

Math teacher Angela Pritchett said Slick has a great work ethic and likes to figure things out, even when they are difficult. He has a unique way of thinking about things, which allows him to be able to complete difficult tasks or find new ways of doing them.

“Jaylex is smarter than anyone deserves to be. He is such a witty and funny kid, and he’s a joy to be around,” English language arts teacher Christopher Sinnett wrote. “On top of everything else, he’s respectful, always doing the right thing for me, even when other people are not. He’s helpful and good to his peers, and they love him, too. I have a ton of respect for this kid.”
