Serious crash on new bypass leaves three injured

Three people were seriously injured in a two-vehicle crash a mile south of East Tipton Street on the Burkart Boulevard bypass in Seymour around 4:30 p.m. Thursday, causing a full road closure.

Lt. Mike Cooper with the Seymour Police Department was on the scene along with the department’s serious injury and fatality crash team and provided information about the incident.

He said a female driver in a vehicle heading south reportedly crossed over the centerline and collided on the driver’s side with a second vehicle being driven northbound by a female. There also was a passenger in that vehicle.

The collision caused the northbound vehicle to flip possibly three times as the driver of that vehicle did not have time to react, Cooper said.

The female driver and passenger in the vehicle that flipped were transported to Schneck Medical Center in Seymour for serious injuries with one of them possibly having to be flown north to a regional hospital for treatment of their injures, Cooper said.

The female driver travelling southbound at first refused medical treatment, but due to the incident being a possible serious injury crash, she consented to go to the hospital for a blood draw, Cooper said. The toxicology results are pending at this time.

Cooper said this is the first major accident that he is aware of on the newly built bypass.
