Ronald Lowell Cornett, age 83, of Brownstown, passed away on Friday, September 1, 2023, at Hoosier Christian Village, Brownstown, surrounded by his loving family.

Mr. Cornett was a member of Brownstown Christian Church, and he was a former member of Freetown Church of Christ, where he served as deacon, song leader, and performed many other duties. He sang in the Messenger’s Quartet, and he traveled regionally, spreading the gospel for over 20 years. Ron was an ordained minister, who preached at Ratcliff Grove Christian Church, Beck’s Grove Christian Church, and more currently at his residence at the Hoosier Christian Village.

Ron graduated from Freetown High School in 1958, and married his high school sweetheart, Saundra McKain, on Thanksgiving evening of that same year, November 27, 1958, at Freetown Church of Christ. She preceded him in death on April 12, 2019.

Mr. Cornett graduated from Almeda University as an adult, was in the 2004 class of Leadership Jackson County, and he was a member of the Country Music Association. Ron was elected to local government, as an Advisory to the Trustee. He served on that board for many years. Ron was also a Kentucky Colonel, and he was very proud of being a colonel.

Ron worked at H.O. Canfield, Arvins, and Cummins Engine Co., retiring there after 30 years of service. As a young man, Ron enlisted in the National Guard, serving locally and in Grayling, Michigan. He was a volunteer firefighter for Pershing Township Volunteer Fire Department for over 30 years.

Mr. Cornett was a deputy sheriff in the 1970’s with the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department, and he was still an honorary member of the Sheriff’s department. He also owned his own promotion company, Cornett Promotions, and promoted local and international talent over the years.

Born on February 6, 1940, in Muncie, he was the son of Winfred and Maxine (Phillips) Cornett, both of whom preceded him in death.

Survivors include one daughter, Robin Michelle (David) Perry of Freetown; two granddaughters: Jaelyn (Ethan) Perry of Freetown, and Carly Perry of Seymour; one great-grandson, Walker Perry of Freetown; one sister, Marsha (Clifton) Mowdy; several nieces and nephews; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

Funeral services for Ronald Lowell Cornett will be conducted at 12:00 noon on Thursday, September 7, 2023, at Spurgeon Funeral Home, Inc., Brownstown, with Pastor Chris Criminger officiating. Friends may call from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 12:00 noon on Thursday, September 7, 2023, at the funeral home.

Interment will take place at Freetown Cemetery.

Military honors will be presented by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1925, American Legion Post 89, Disabled American Veterans 47, and Vietnam Vets 7.

Memorials may be given to Brownstown Christian Church Move the Mountain, Freetown Church of Christ, and Hoosier Christian Village Auxiliary.
