Seymour resident to show art gallery in Vernon

Perceptions Yoga, Mindfulness & Art is inviting the public to the September art show featuring the work of Mike Allen.

The show opens with an artist reception from 5 to 7 p.m. Sept. 1 at the studio, 139 E. State Road 3, Vernon. Refreshments will be served.

Allen was raised and went to school in North Vernon and now lives in Seymour, where he is an herbalist. He is a student of artist Kay Fox and finds painting and creating art to be therapeutic in nature.

“Our artist receptions are great opportunities to meet the artist, learn about art, have great conversations and connect with other art lovers in our community, all while supporting a great cause,” said Charlinda Evans, president of Perceptions, a nonprofit organization devoted to providing affordable art, yoga and mindful practices in Jennings County.

Allen’s artwork will be on display and for sale at the opening and during regular gallery hours from noon to 5 p.m. Tuesdays, 1:30 to 5 p.m. Thursdays and 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays in September.

A closing reception will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Sept. 29 so individuals can pick up purchased items or buy any unsold items.

According to his artist statement, Allen has been painting for four years. He said it wasn’t until he began his journey of personal healing that he was advised to discover painting. Allen met Fox of Kay Fox Art & Design in Seymour, where she guided him on a journey to find his inner artist.

Allen said conducting research into his family heritage, he found connections to Scotland. He currently has a series of paintings with Scottish influence.

Allen said he enjoys painting landscapes, architecture and animals. His favorite medium is oil, and he uses a palette knife to add texture to several of his art pieces.
