Owls soccer defeats Lions for first win of season

The Seymour Owls girls soccer team had a bad taste in their mouths from their 1-0 loss on Saturday to Batesville.

The team responded when it hosted Salem on Monday, dominating the game for the 35 minutes it was played.

Seymour won the game 5-0 after it was called due to the weather.

Katy Roark dominated the contest for the Owls, picking up the hat trick with her three scores.

Rachel Lenart and Rochiely Zarate-Gibson grabbed the other goals for Seymour in their first win of the season.

“It’s always nice to get some early goals.” Seymour head coach Greg Musser said. “I was happy that we scored those goals at the start of the game. The number one thing we wanted the girls to do was start fast, and that’s exactly what they did.”

Seymour controlled possession for nearly the entire game, only allowing the Lions a few possessions.

Assists for the Owls came from Ella Brock, who had two dimes for the team, Valeria Galicia, Zarate-Gibson and Alondra Zamora.

Elizabeth Trueblood shut down the goal for the Owls, registering her first shutout of the season.

Musser was satisfied with the result of the team.

“The tempo was a little slow for what we were trying to accomplish,” he said. “The girls still stayed composed and finished a lot of their scoring opportunities. The team took a few minutes to get settled into the game, but once we started playing through our midfield, the goals started happening.”

Seymour hosts Columbus North on Thursday at Seymour High School. The game is scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m.

Musser expects a tough game from the next opponent.

“They are always a very tough opponent,” he added. “We will need to be ready from the start of the game. The girls must have defensive organization in this game against Columbus North. We will prepare for that in the next few days of practice.”

Seymour will look to pick up its second victory of the season when the Bull Dogs come to town.

The Owls will then travel to Bloomington North on Saturday for their next game, which will start at 11:30 a.m.
