What’s the name of the book and author you are recommending?

“Too Late,” a novel by Colleen Hoover.

What made you want to pick up this book in the first place?

She began writing this book back in 2012 on a free website, and it recently was revisited by the author and published. It was released in June of this year.

Once you got into the book, what made you want to keep reading it?

It began with a trigger warning from the author about foul language, graphic sexual scenes, murder, sexual assault and drug use in a note at the beginning of the book. She explained the book was in no way intended for children, and it could be hard for many to read. It was something she began writing when she had writer’s block, and it is very different from her typical novels. I wasn’t sure if it would be something I was interested in, but the actual storyline kept me reading the book. There were a few twists and turns that I didn’t see coming. It also still included a love story, which is something I typically like in a book.

Once you finished the book, what did you like about it?

It was a book I found very hard to put down. It never seemed to satisfy my need to know what was happening next until the very end of the book. The book itself was a very dark story; however, it ended happily. With a happy ending, it felt like all of the dark and awful things the characters endured was worth it and that chapter in their lives ended for them when the book ended.

What is the book about?

This book is about a girl named Sloan, who starts dating a drug trafficker named Asa. She finds herself trapped dating him when she has no way to pay for her brother’s care. Asa takes care of her bills but then begins to become dangerously obsessed with her. Then enters a DEA agent named Carter. He is there to take down the drug trafficker; however, he becomes attracted to Sloan. Carter and Sloan having an immediate attraction for each other puts them in danger. Together, Sloan and Carter must find a way out before it is too late.

Why would you recommend this book to others?

While this book may be hard for many to read because of the hard topics, I think that is what makes it such a good read for many others. While this is a fictional story, these topics can be very real for some. The author dives right into the dark and messy topics, which made this book very hard for me to put down. This book can be read digitally through Libby and also checked out at the Jackson County Public Library.
