Seymour Area Farmers Market profile: Gene Fleetwood

The Seymour Area Farmers Market will be open from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday in the Walnut Street Parking Lot located south of the railroad tracks near the Jackson County Public Library in Seymour.

The market also is open from 8 a.m. to noon Wednesdays.

What items do you sell at the farmers market?

Fruits and vegetables grown in the garden behind my house, including three different varieties of green beans, two different varieties of potatoes, tomatoes, okra, cantaloupes and watermelons.

What made you want to start your growing produce?

When I was growing up, if we hadn’t had a garden, we’d have gone hungry. I was born in 1933, and it was a necessity.

Where did you learn to produce your product?

I learned while I was growing up and have done it ever since.

How long have you been producing the items you sell at the market?

I’ve been coming here for several years.

Do you do this full time or is this a side business/hobby?

This is a hobby.

What about the farmers market makes it beneficial to you as a business?

It’s a place where people know I’ll be.

What do you enjoy about selling your goods locally?

I just enjoy growing produce.

Favorite items that you sell?

Probably tomatoes and potatoes.

What products from other vendors do you enjoy?

There’s something good at all of them.

Why do you think folks should shop at the farmers market?

They can get fresh foods here.
