Relay for Life events planned

The Relay For Life of Columbus is celebrating “Hometown Heroes” from 2 to 10 p.m. Aug. 26 at Northside Middle School, 1400 27th St. in Columbus.

Registration for interested donors to the American Cancer Society and for participants is available online at relayforlife.org/columbusin. Survivors are encouraged to register to receive a survivor t-shirt.

The event is open to the public, and all hometown heroes are encouraged to attend and participate in special laps from 4 to 5 p.m. This year’s fundraising goal is $50,000.

The tentative schedule:

2 to 4 p.m.: Touch a Truck event with fire, police, Salvation Army, library vehicle and more

2-5 p.m.: Community Agency Fair with Human Services, Columbus Regional Hosptial Cancer Center, I.U. Vision and more

3 p.m.: Opening ceremony with survivor and caregiver laps

4-4:15 p.m.: Law enforcement and military laps

4:15-4:30 p.m.: Firefighters laps

4:30-4:45 p.m.: Emergency medical technicians and medical laps

4:45-5 p.m.: Teachers laps

5 p.m.: Live auction

6 p.m.: Bubble laps

7 p.m.: Poker laps

8 p.m.: Game laps

9 p.m.: Luminaria ceremony

10 p.m.: Closing ceremony

Jackson County teams also will participate in a drive or walk-thru display of luminaria bags in honor or memory of loved ones in the parking lot at First Baptist Church in Seymour from 6 to 9 p.m. Sept. 9.

Names will be read at the top and bottom of each hour: 6 p.m., 6:30 p.m., 7 p.m., 8 p.m., 8:30 p.m. and 9 p.m.

A special ceremony will be held at 7:30 p.m. Visitors are encouraged to park before or after driving or walking through to listen to the names being read.

Some of the 39 currently registered participants on 9 teams as well as anyone interested in participating will meet at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, July 18, at the Northside Middle School track to go over logistics and event updates.
