Couple flown to hospital after collision with train

An older couple was flown to an Indianapolis hospital late Saturday afternoon after sustaining injuries from a collision with a train on North County Road 1250E east of Seymour, police said.

The couple was traveling northbound in an SUV when a train heading east on the CSX rail line toward Cincinnati struck the vehicle as it went over the tracks, according to a state trooper. The vehicle spun around and landed in the ditch next to the tracks.

The male driver and the female passenger were thrown from the seats of the vehicle but trapped in the car by their seatbelts.

Personnel with Jackson County Emergency Medical Service and Redding Township Volunteer Fire Department assisted at the scene.

According to state police, the couple was in stable enough condition to be transported by a St. Vincent Jennings Hospital helicopter, and the train conductor did not sustain any injuries.
