Seymour golf celebrates spring season

The Seymour boys golf team gathered at Shadowood Golf Course on Tuesday to put a bow on the Owls’ 2023 spring season.

It was a season in which Seymour placed fifth at sectional and sixth in the Hoosier Hills Conference.

The Owls also had competitive nine-hole matches, nearly beating top-ranked Franklin head-to-head, competed well at Columbus North and defeated Bedford North Lawrence in a home match at Shadowood.

Head coach Jim Hoffman started with the junior varsity awards. Brady Terrell, Paulton Rennekamp, Trevor Goecker, Noah Wineinger and Riley Bear all earned JV certificates.

Rennekamp was named the JV most improved golfer, and Goecker earned the JV Owl Award for sportsmanship.

For varsity, Manny Fontanez, Ty Stuckwisch, Luke Baker, Noah Surface, Eli Meyer, Jay Herbert, Trenton Morris, Luke Fischer, Trevor Alberring and Zach Kriete all were given varsity certificates.

Fontanez, Stuckwisch and Surface were all three-year players, Alberring was the only two-year player and the rest were all in their first season on the links.

The most improved award went to Baker, who was a freshman this past season and consistently played in the varsity lineup. He averaged 42.5 for nine holes and 88 for 18 holes, and he shot a career-best 39 against Columbus North this season and shot an 82 in the HHC match.

The Owl Award was given to Stuckwisch, who was consistently one of the Owls’ top two players all season long along with showing excellent sportsmanship. He averaged 43 for nine holes and 87 for 18 holes.

The low stroke average award winner went to Fontanez, who finished averaging 41 for nine holes and 85 for 18 holes.

The other Owls who had the most varsity appearances were Surface, as he averaged 43 for nine holes and 88 for 18 holes, and Alberring, who averaged 44 for nine holes and 91 for 18 holes.

The seniors on Seymour’s roster this past spring who have already graduated were Fontanez, Stuckwisch, Alberring, Meyer and Surface.

Although all seniors played a valuable role on this year’s team and Seymour will be losing a lot of talented players, Hoffman was encouraged from what he saw from some of the underclassmen this season.

He hopes those Owls continue to play over the summer and commit to their game to try to improve and be better when next spring’s season rolls around.
