Seymour softball celebrates 2023 season at awards banquet

The Seymour softball team gathered at the school last week to celebrate the 2023 season.

Under first-year head coach Emily Bobb, the Owls went 9-16 this past spring and 3-3 in the Hoosier Hills Conference.

The Owls battled Bedford North Lawrence in the sectional and only lost 3-0, limiting the Stars’ high-powered offense.

Seymour’s junior varsity team went 10-1-2 on the season, and there was one JV award given out at the awards banquet last week. Taylor Stuckwisch earned the JV Owl award.

As for varsity, Bobb had three individual awards to hand out.

The offensive player of the year award went to Abby Followell. She had a batting average of .398 with 33 hits, 12 RBI, 11 doubles and three home runs on the season, and she also scored 24 runs.

The defensive player of the year award went to Phoebe Underwood, who was Seymour’s ace on the season.

Underwood had a 2.18 ERA in 15 appearances, pitching 54.2 innings with 33 strikeouts. She had a winning record of 4-3.

The third award given was the varsity Owl award, which went to shortstop Jamie Bobb, who had a fielding percentage of .820 with 38 putouts, and she also had 26 hits and seven RBI.

Followell earned a spot on the all-Hoosier Hills Conference team, and Underwood was named HHC honorable mention.

Seymour had two seniors on the roster in Alexia Rieckers and Kendall Allman.

Rieckers hit .297 with 22 hits and 17 RBI, and she also pitched 56.2 innings with 35 strikeouts.

Allman also had a stellar hitting year as she batted .419 with 26 hits, 16 RBI, six doubles and three home runs.

Both seniors will be playing collegiate softball next year. Rieckers will be playing at Indiana University-Purdue University Columbus and Allman at Spalding University.

“They’ve made a great impact on our program,” Bobb said after the season. “I’m so proud of them, and I’m so glad that they get to play collegiate softball and that this isn’t their last game. I’m looking forward to cheering them on and following them throughout their collegiate careers.”

With only graduating two seniors, the Owls will get a lot of returning players back next season, and Bobb is excited to continue to build the program with that group.
