What’s the name of the book and author you are recommending?

“I’m Glad My Mom Died” by Jennette McCurdy.

What made you want to pick up this book in the first place?

There has been a lot of talk about this book since it came out, so once it was available, I checked it out at our library.

Once you got into the book, what made you want to keep reading it?

She is a fantastic storyteller. Even through all of the pain and trauma, you want to keep reading and cheering for her.

Once you finished the book, what did you like about it?

I liked her honesty and transparency. She seems to have put everything, the good and especially the bad, into the book and say, “I made it through this by being honest and working on myself.” That self reflection and work is something everyone should strive to do.

What is the book about?

This book is a biography of Jennette McCurdy’s (Sam from Nickelodeon’s “iCarly”) life. She talks of her relationships with her dad, grandparents, siblings and especially the tumultuous one with her mother. She also talks about her experiences with love, career, trauma, abuse, addictions, romance, eating disorders and everything in between. She is a fantastic writer who pulls you into her story and has you rooting for her happy ending, which she achieves, or about as much as she can with the life she was given.

Why would you recommend this book to others?

I would highly recommend this book to everyone. It can open eyes about narcissistic personalities, abuse, addictions, eating disorders, therapy and self-help and the behind the scenes of stardom, though this material could be triggering for those currently in or who recently faced any of those topics, so keep that in mind before reading.
