Seymour’s 4×400 runs PR at state meet

BLOOMINGTON — The Seymour boys 4×400 relay team ended its season on a good note on Friday night at the IHSAA boys track and field state finals.

Seymour’s team of Devon Jackson, Michael Brooks, Josh Rennekamp and Jaylan Johnson ran a personal-best time of 3:25.66.

Seymour was seeded 20th out of 25 teams with a time of 3:26.10, and they wound up placing higher than that, finishing 17th place overall.

Center Grove took home first place (3:16.41), followed by Warren Central (3:16.89), Plainfield (3:17.15), Mt. Vernon Fortville (3:17.57), Carmel (3:18.07), Lawrence Central (3:19.33), Brownsburg (3:19.66), Bloomington North (3:21.70), Fishers (3:21.04), Ft. Wayne Snider (3:22.68), Lake Central (3:23.34), Bloomington South (3:23.44), Churubusco (3:23.44), Angola (3:24.39), Indianapolis Bishop Chatard (3:24.41), Hobart (3:25.01), Seymour (3:25.66), Providence (3:25.66), Warsaw Community (3:25.82), Evansville North (3:26.28), Concord (3:26.83), Northridge (3:27.21), West Lafayette (3:28.09), LaPorte (3:28.83) and Gibson Southern (3:32.74).

The Owls ran in heat one of three on Friday night, and they were seeded first in that heat.

Jackson, Brooks and Johnson are all sophomores, while Rennekamp was the lone senior. After qualifying from regionals, Rennekamp said he had been waiting four years to finally reach the state finals, and the Owls did just that.

They came close in 2022 in the 4×400, and at regional last week, it came down to the wire as Seymour edged out Jennings County for third place as it was 3:26.10 to 3:26.88.

Rennekamp said he wanted to try to reach the school record (3:24) on Friday night, but finishing with a personal-best time was a successful trip to the state finals for the Owls.
