Multi-agency manhunt ends in arrest of Scipio man

A Scipio man was arrested Thursday on three active warrants with nationwide extradition after a multi-agency manhunt occurred in the Hayden area of Geneva Township in Jennings County.

Brian L. Weber, 58, was arrested on an Indiana parole retake warrant for dealing cocaine, a Decatur County warrant for failure to appear for a habitual offender sentencing hearing, a Decatur County warrant for burglary while armed with a deadly weapon causing serious bodily injury, intimidation toward a law enforcement officer, a Level 6 felony, and resisting law enforcement, a Class A misdemeanor, according to a news release from the Jennings County Sheriff’s Office.

In the early morning of Thursday, detectives with the Jennings County Sheriff’s Office Investigation Division began gathering information regarding a violent felon, Weber, in the Hayden area.

Along with the active warrants, Weber had a lengthy criminal history, including previous drug and violent crime convictions, according to the news release.

Investigators provided intelligence that Weber had made comments that he was not going back to prison and would go down in “a blaze of glory,” according to the news release.

Investigators were granted a search warrant by Jennings County Circuit Court for a Hayden residence where Weber had been living.

The Jennings County SWAT team was activated, and the Seymour Police Department’s SWAT team assisted the agency in operation. With the assistance of Seymour SWAT and several other agencies, the search warrant was executed, and Weber, who was outside at the time, fled across several properties, according to the news release.

Several 911 calls from concerned citizens reported seeing Weber on their property as he fled. These calls aided in locating Weber, police said.

After a search of the area, officers located Weber in a barn approximately a half-mile away from the location of the search warrant, according to the news release.

Instead of surrendering to law enforcement, Weber attempted to end his own life. Jennings County K-9 Zobi was deployed by his handler, Officer Shane Trepanier, and Weber was successfully apprehended by Zobi before he could end his life, police said.

Weber was treated for minor injuries and remanded into the custody of the Jennings County Jail in North Vernon.

Personnel with Jennings County Emergency Management Agency, Jennings County Emergency Medical Services, Indiana Department of Natural Resources and Indiana State Police also assisted.
