Another Little Free Library coming to Brownstown

BROWNSTOWN — Little Free Libraries have been popping up everywhere in recent years.

The county seat is about to gain at least one more thanks to a grant from the Cummins Foundation.

On May 1, representatives with READ Jackson County discussed a proposal for a new one with the Brownstown Town Council during its meeting at the town hall.

“We’re here to give you a wonderful proposal,” Becky Bujwid said. “We would like to bring a Little Library to Brownstown.”

Bujwid, president of the READ Jackson County board, said the board recently received a wonderful grant from Cummins to purchase 10 Little Free Library kits for communities in the county.

The Little Free Libraries will be assembled, stained and delivered when fully assembled as part of a Jackson County United Way Day of Caring project, she said. The annual Day of Caring is today, but Bujwid said the town would not need to do its part that day.

She, however, said the organization would like the town to provide the posts and concrete for it.

Julinda Stout, secretary of the READ Jackson County board, said the Little Free Library also could be attached to a building, which would then not cost the town anything.

Stout said the board is thinking that Brownstown’s newest Little Free Library could perhaps be installed near the pool in the town park because there are a lot of kids there in the summertime.

At least two other Little Free Libraries are located in Brownstown — one on South Main Street north of Steinkamp Street and the second attached to Studio SPF at 214 S. Sugar St. Neither of those, however, belong to READ Jackson County.

“This is a volunteer program through READ, so they will come and fill those boxes with books,” Stout said of the one READ Jackson County provides in Brownstown.

READ accept books from anyone, including groups willing to hold a book drive, Bujwid said.

“It’s a nice way to just bring extra attention to reading with books for the community,” Bujwid said.

Stout said there already are Little Free Libraries in Seymour, Crothersville, Freetown and Medora.

The public may take books from the Little Free Libraries at any time and may place books in them, but that is not a requirement to replace it.
