State Road 256 to close for bridge project in Jackson County

The Indiana Department of Transportation plans to close State Road 256 next week between State Road 39 and Austin for a bridge replacement project in Jackson County.

The structure is located 2.5 miles east of State Road 39. The closure is anticipated to last up to 30 days, weather permitting.

During the closure, drivers should use the official detour, which follows Interstate 65, State Road 56 and State Road 39, or seek an alternative route.

Contractor Force Construction Co. Inc. will be leading the project. Two additional projects are included on the $4.7 million contract.

They are a bridge replacement on State Road 256 located 1.5 miles west of I-65 over the Muscatatuck River, which is anticipated to begin in June, and a bridge replacement on State Road 256 located 1 mile east of State Road 39, which is anticipated to begin in 2024.

INDOT reminds drivers to slow down, avoid distractions and consider worker safety when traveling through active construction zones. All work is weather-dependent, and schedules are subject to change.
