Seymour Lady Owls tennis coach Brandon Davis will take 5-0 wins anywhere, anytime, especially when they come against a sectional opponent.
The Owls improved to 2-1 with a 5-0 victory over Scottsburg at home Tuesday afternoon.
“It was very textbook, cut and dry,” Davis said. “There was nothing fancy about it. We didn’t have to fight to the death. It was a good, clean win, and the girls played great tonight.”
Brooke Schafstall, at No.1 singles, was the first Lady Owl off the courts following a 6-0, 6-0 win over Claire Routt.
The win evened Schafstall’s record at 3-3. She said, “I need to work on my second serve because right now that’s where I’m really faulting. I need more practice with it. It was a good win for the team. We all played a good match. That really pulled through.”
Elise Hartung won 7-5, 6-1 over Grace Routt at No. 2 singles, while Claire Combs outlasted Olivia Spellman 3-6, 6-3, 10-8 at No. 3 singles.
Davis liked the way Combs played hard to the end.
“She finished strong,” he said. “She went down that first set, but she realized ‘I’ve got to kick it into gear,’ and she breezed through that second set, and then said, ‘all right, lets work this tie-breaker’ and she got the job done.”
The Seymour doubles teams also dominated as Caroline Thompson and Jessica Hougland were 7-5, 6-1 winners over Kira Shelhamer and Olivia Fugate at No. 1, and Ava Sunbury and Addison Hunsley defeated Klara Leach and Melea Luttrell 6-1, 6-3 at two doubles.
Davis said about the doubles teams, “There’s always room for improvement, but we’re starting off strong with good communication and good footwork. I think we’re moving well, and we’re headed in the right direction.”
The Owls will travel to Columbus East on Thursday then defend their title in the Shelbyville Invite on Saturday.
“It’s a big week and we hope to continue the progress, and wins we got today. I don’t see us stopping. I think we just need to be more aggressive at the net. I think we’re kind of shy at the net, and that goes for everybody,” Davis said.“I think everybody gets a little timid when the ball is coming at them at the net. So we just need to get our feet ready at the net and move back and forth and just finish the point being aggressive.”
Schafstall said, “We had never played in the Silver Creek Tournament. It had been rained out the past two times. This past Saturday was like an eye-opener because we’ve got teams like Providence, Lawrenceburg and Bloomington North. They’re all teams where their skill level is pretty good. We compete with those teams.
“We just don’t walk in there and do our thing and walk back out. You’ve got to work for all of those games and those points.”
Seymour’s JV doubles teams went 2-2 Tuesday. Marlo Cornn and Ashley Clemente won 8-4, Tori Fee and Chantel Wilson won 8-2, Avery Musgrave and Haley Heckman lost 8-4, and Kylee Cooper and Blythe Brummett lost 8-6.
