Medora honors R.E.D. Hornets of the Month

MEDORA — Responsibility, empathy and determination are qualities that Medora Community School Corp. continues to focus on in helping students succeed.

During Monday night’s board of school trustees meeting, the March R.E.D. Hornets of the Month were honored.

Those honored include junior Mikayla McCory for her politeness to others and dedication in the classroom, freshman Hayden Adams for his kindness and responsible attitude and seventh-grader Damon Branaman for his hard work in the classroom.

Kara Hunt, principal of Medora Junior-Senior High School, introduced the honorees to trustees and read statements from their teachers.

“Mikayla is always extremely polite and well-behaved,” computer science teacher Riley Morris wrote. “She was a pleasure to have in class last trimester.”

Science teacher Leah Young said McCory is a polite and great student academically. She also said she enjoyed having McCory in class and chatting with her out of class.

“Mikayla McCory is a very kind and dedicated student. She is always trying her best in school and looking out for others, as well,” English language arts teacher Rebecca Lanier wrote.

She is a good friend to her peers and also very empathetic and kind to her teachers and is much deserving of the title Hornet of the Month, Lanier wrote.

Adams’ teachers honored him for determination and responsibility in the classroom.

“Hayden is a sweet kid. I look forward to conversations with him every morning in the hallway, especially on the days he quizzes me with random historical facts,” Morris said. “Hayden is well-behaved and tries his best to do well in class.”

Young said Adams is a kind student and a pleasure to have in her class.

“Hayden Adams is thoughtful about his actions and takes responsibility for them,” teacher Bobbi Derheimer wrote. “He demonstrates determination in his desire to learn and master skills.”

Lanier honored Adams for his sense of humor and his strive to always do his best in the classroom.

Branaman was not able to make it to the meeting, but words of praise were still given from his teachers.

“Damon was wonderful in class last trimester. He tries hard on his work and often surprises you with how much he is able to do,” Morris wrote. “He took to video editing and storyboarding far more than I expected last trimester. He also took part in our short film production, ‘A Medora Hornets Mystery,’ and did a great job as Gunner Buck Hunter.”

Young said Branaman is a hard worker and always offers to help with any project she has.

“Damon is not only hardworking in my class, but he definitely makes class more fun,” math and science teacher Angela Pritchett said. “Sometimes, he likes to share random trivia (which he has a lot) or just has something funny or interesting to share with the class.”
