Siblings arrested after shots fired from vehicle

Two siblings have been arrested in connection with an incident in which shots were fired Monday evening in an alley on Seymour’s south side.

No one was injured and no damage was reported in the incident that was about a dispute involving a video game system, police report.

Billy Joe Gorbett, 20, of Brownstown and his sister, Jodie L. Gorbett, 18, of Columbus, each face Level 5 felony charges of intimidation and criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon. Billy also faces a second Level 5 felony charge of criminal recklessness and a Level 6 felony charge of obstruction of justice.

The arrests stem from an investigation into an incident reported to Seymour Police Department dispatchers a little after 8 p.m. Monday, according to a news release from Lt. C.J. Foster.

Patrol officers were sent to an alley between the 700 block of South Pine Street and the 700 block of South Poplar Street in reference to a report of shots being fired from a vehicle described as a white passenger car, he said.

The vehicle left the area westbound on Jackson Street, Foster said. Investigators also were able to collect several file casings from the scene.

On Tuesday, police received a tip about who was involved in the shooting and who owned the suspect vehicle, Foster said.

Police located Billy during a traffic stop and took him into custody. Jodie was later located and arrested at a residence in Columbus.

Based on information obtained during the investigation, police obtained a Jackson Superior Court II search warrant for a residence at 1466 Chestnut St. in Columbus, Foster said.

A handgun was found during the search of that home.

Billy was booked into the Jackson County Jail in Brownstown at 10:36 p.m. Tuesday, while Jodie was booked into the jail at 6:16 a.m. Wednesday. Both were being held without bond pending their initial hearings.

Officers with the Columbus Police Department assisted with the investigation.
